For the best results, use a nice, firm baking apple like a Granny Smith or the Honeycrisp apples, which are really nice this time of year if you can get ahold of them. If you're not a bourbon drinker, Jessica recommends spiced rum as equally nice. We think an apple brandy like Calvados would be pretty special, too.
