What a splendid idea: Turn a watermelon into a cake!
This lovely idea came originally from Martha Stewart, but it was executed brilliantly by Sala of Veggie Belly. She has great photos of the process: You slice a watermelon into slices, arrange them like a round cake, then top with watermelon balls. Very pretty and a great presentation for simple watermelon.
You can serve it simply — just the fruit alone — or sprinkle it lightly with mint and sugar, as we did here.

That's simply lovely!
i would actually "macerate" the pieces in sugar and mint, and lemon juice, allow the the moisture to drain out, and then, place it onto the cake. only because i forsee a lot of drippage.
OH IDEA!
We can freeze the balls before arranging. Sigh. Refreshment!
Seems so fussy for such a simple pleasure as watermelon.
That has always been the way I eat watermelon. I'll even trim off the rind and cut the disk-shape flesh into cake slices.
