Now this is an unusual way to store your pots and pans: a low-hanging pot rack built right into the kitchen island. What do you think?
Designed by David Neiman Architects, this arrangement has some advantages. By hanging the pots low to the ground, you keep them readily available without having too much of a conspicuous display — ideal if you're not a fan of this look or this look. It also seems to be a decent space-saver.
But would you want your pots so low to the floor? Tell us your thoughts below.

Straw Mat from The ...

This is an O.K. idea in general, but I'm sure it's completely unacceptable for anyone who has a pet, like myself!
It looks cute but I don't want anything I cook with to be down at the level of dust bunnies and dog hair tumbleweed...
cat hair. everywhere. that's what i think when i see that.
Toddler bait.
I like it...but not with the pots sticking out the way that they are (pretty sure I would walk into them constantly). And it definitely wouldn't work in a house with pets.
Looks beautiful! But the reality in my house: dog slobber.
Nice kitchen! I'd probably bark my shins on the pans. I'm not concerned about the pet situation ... we have 2 dogs, dog hair everywhere no matter how often I sweep/vacuum. I rinse everything anyway - my Mom ingrained that into me. Plus, the random times I've reached into a cupboard to get a pan, bowl, mug, etc. and come across a spider or set of disembodied legs has reinforced the rinse everything mantra of my childhood.
Good idea, but may be inside a kitchen cupboard?
love to cook this magnificent kitchen...
I'm going to agree with the majority here. All of my "bottom shelf" things need a quick clean before they can be used. (cats and toddler)
Plus, I think I'd bump into them whenever I pass, causing quite a cacophony every time.
It looks gorgeous. That said, I'd knock into it every time I went by, the cat hair and dog slobber would be unbelievable, and spilling something over the edge of the countertop would require cleaning every. single. pot. and. pan.
I think this is a case of design not meeting lifestyle, at least for most, though it may work for the owners of this kitchen!
Beautiful kitchen but I hate the pot rack. I couldn't have it because my dog would think it was the neatest play thing ever, but even in a pet-free, child-free home I don't like to look of it.
I love it! I get tired of seeing pot racks from the ceiling and this one is completely unobtrusive!
Agree with the others that suggested an enclosed cabinet around this. Pets and toddlers or no, I think it would be too easy to accidentally brush up against these and set off a cacophony of banging and rattling.
I like it, but I would find it inconvenient to have the pots nowhere near the stove.
That is one amazing looking kitchen! As a short person, the low pot hanging seems genius. Yea, my pup would work to keep those pots & pans "clean", so a pullout with the hanger might be better.
How about a kitchen tour??
My toddlers would love this idea!
No way. Not only are they sticking out enough to be constantly bumped into and jostled, (and probably fall), but they are way too close to the open floor for grit and grime. This is a classic case of form before function. Though I'd like my kitchen to look nice, it's far more important to me that it functions intelligently first.
I have a basset hound so drool and fur would abound. Plus I'd be worried I'd be running into them and bruising my shins all the time.
I will say I like the idea of hanging them inside a cabinet though.
I'm with the others--I'd constantly be banging my knees on the things.
I think about how icky my baseboards get, and I wouldn't be comfortable with anything food related being exposed to that.
Yep, cat hair and dog snot. And I would trip over them constantly.
Crash! Boom! Bang! Clang!
What was the question? I could see your lips moving, but couldn't hear the question. :)
Not. Too close to the floor and dirt. I do like the ideas that several above have mentioned. Putting a set of hooks like this a little above counter height, or even in 'appliance garage' position would work. Not having to move several stacked pans to get the one you want is a big advantage of pot racks.
This just looks like shin bruises to me.
PS--would like to see at least a floor plan of these interesting kitchens when they are featured--This one in particular.
Love it! I might hang some S hooks on my metal kitchen cart. I use the top of it for my big coffee appliances, and have been loving the extra shelves in the kitchen, but they're so...well...metallic that storing mugs or pretty bowls on it looked wrong.
I think I'll hang pots off the sides and put muffin tins, cookie sheets, and other metal things on the shelves.
Up until now, with limited cabinet, wall and counter space, the pots have all lived in the oven and whenever I needed a bigger oven than the toaster oven, I had to carry all the pots to the living room and pile them on the side tables until the baking was done.
This seriously limited my roasting and baking, as you can imagine
This kitchen is beautiful, but hanging the pots in that spot is gross. Even in a house without small children or pets, are you going to wash them every time someone accidentally kicks one? Or bumps one with a mop or vacuum?
This might work better if they were set deeper into the cabinet (i.e., not sticking out beyond the edge of the cabinet) and had a shelf underneath them rather than the floor.
I guess this designer didn't want stuff cluttering the cabinet, but having the microwave sitting that low also seems impractical.
It would only work in a home without pets or small children and a serious commitment to mopping.
I agree with your comments about the pots & pans, pearlgirl. However, I don't use my microwave very often and it takes up so much valuable counter space- I love the idea of having it on a lower shelf out of the way.
I have to admit I would love this for my cast iron ... if it was a realistic set-up. The possibility of kicking what cooks food is just wrong. Even when shoes come off at the door, so much is carried in unseen on pants, skirts, etc. ... crrrringe. Everyone else has already chimed in on my first thought (pets).
Considering how much I have to wipe my lower white cabinets with a dog, cat and teenagers that would just seem impossible. I might as well store them on the floor. I totally love the look but it really wouldn't be feasible in my house.
My dogs would turn it into a full percussion section.
That said, it might be VERY nice for a wheelchair user.
Not good for toddlers, kids, pets or shins. Also, why hide away something that looks great, especially in a kitchen that has so much airspace?
The idea initially grossed me out, but it might have some good applications. Persons with disabilities, etc... I'm sure someone could find a great use for this!
looks nice but with kids pets shins knees and sweeping the floor dust etc right on it not so good if the drawers were not there and a shelf under the pots in a space like the microwave maybe not so bad and like others have said some one with disabilities it may be of great use and I am rinser of all things as well
LOL. Ditto. Double rinsing some times. OCD maybe? :P
