- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- I like my kitchen because it is totally me - I try not to be influenced by trends and only put in it what I really love! I'm definitely the cook in my family so it really is my space.
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- When we moved in, the kitchen was stacked full of cupboards. We couldn't afford to knock through into the room next to it and extend immediately, so we did a mini makeover on it to keep us going until we could! We replaced the worktops, repainted and put new handles on the doors. We took all the cupboards down and replaced them with shelves and whitewashed the walls. The challenge is that the kitchen is so small that the fridge freezer has to be kept in the utility room which is an even tinier space.
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- Lebanese lemon chicken with rosemary, chilli and bulgar wheat which is an all time favourite! Although my kids would say pizza...

Love your wood countertops--I just installed some in my new kitchen. Do you simply oil yours, or is there some sort of polyurethane or other finish on them?
Hi Lisa. I love that dolphin, the floor tiles and the book storage. Lebanese lemon chicken sounds delicious - do you have the recipe?
Oh, that dark green colour on the lower cabinets looks great, too.
Thanks for your lovely comments! The Lebanese chicken is a Jamie Oliver recipe from his Jamie's Kitchen book. Here's a link to the recipe: http://www.curdhome.co.uk/recipes/pdf/LebaneseLemonChicken.pdf
I always use bulgar wheat and don't use a cartouche, just put the chicken directly on the grains.
Thanks, Lisa, I'll try that. Good luck with the competition.
I love it-- so serene, tidy and cheerful. I am definitely envious of those floor tiles, too!
I also live in Reading! Great kitchen, I think I will enter next year.
I love it! Cosy and cute!
It is very cosy looking. I like the door leading to the outside. Have you blocked that off?
No, we just don't use that door that much as we have double doors in the conservatory attached to the kitchen. It's a barn door so we often have the top half open (this is England, however - currently 16 degrees, so not that often at the moment!). Thanks for your comments!
I love that you took down the upper cabinets and created a kitchen you love while you wait to do the larger improvement. So many people just put up with kitchens they hate instead of taking little steps to make it their own in the meantime. The kitchen is the heart of the home and yours looks like you produce some fantastic meals & memories there. There is something "Winnie The Poo" about it.
Love the backdoor, that huge window and those lovely floors.
Love the colour choice of the cabinets with the wood counters! It all looks so inviting and cozy!
I love the Dutch door, and I love the floor tile. And I can't help but notice the sweet map wallpaper, even if it's not in the kitchen. Here's to individuality!
I love it! Perfect little colorful touches. Bravo! And I love the open shelving. I want so badly to tear out my own top cupboards but my husband might kill me.
