When this book landed on my doorstep, I was dubious. Le Pain Quotidien, a.k.a. The Daily Bread?! But I'm gluten intolerant! Yet several weeks later I haven't been able to stop referring to it. The bread and tartine recipes look incredible, yes, but there are tons other gems here, from inspired breakfasts to wholesome lunches, dinners, and desserts. Nothing is complicated, yet everything feels special, punctuated by color, texture, and freshness.

Other highlights: I have never actually been to at any of Le Pain Quotidien's 172 worldwide restaurants, so I had no preconceived notions about the cookbook — and can't quite tell you whether it's representative of the dishes you'd find on location. I can tell you, however, that it's full of inviting, nourishing food. 

The first part of the cookbook contains bread recipes, from sourdough to multigrain breads, seeded rolls, and even a gluten-free Brazilian cheese bread. Breakfast comes next, with terrific ideas that'll get you out of a morning rut; I especially loved the chia seed porridge with orange and yogurt and the Tunisian-style oatmeal with harissa and herbs. The heart of the book is full of tartines topped with seasonal ingredients. Soups are next, then salads, foods to share (everything from dips to pastas, quinoa, and vegetarian chili). Finally, the desserts, which include classics like canelés and originals like a pink grapefruit and turmeric granita.
