It’s been so hot lately that we’ve all but lost our appetite for normal meals. Inevitably, we find ourselves in the kitchen around bedtime, in need of a quick midnight snack (or in our case, 10:30 snack) before turning in. What are your favorite foods for late-night snacking?
After discovering a local vendor with several varieties of popping corn, I’ve been on a serious popcorn kick. It’s so satisfying and barely requires the use of any kitchen equipment. I admit to the entire bowl standing at the counter with a book and a cold beer for company.
And there’s always The Other midnight snack, of course. Ice cream, spooned straight from the container. Nothing better.
What do you nosh before bed?

Pickles, olives, cheese, or marinated artichoke hearts. My best friend always serves himself giant bowls of cereal or 4 pieces of toast with butter and jam.
Cheese and crackers!!
a spoonful of almond butter!
Marinated mushrooms or pickles. Or cheese and good bread. Or fresh fruit.
Or, in this heat, homemade frozen yogurt (aka toss tub of yogurt and fresh fruit into the ice cream maker a half-hour before said snack).
@mangabanga: Sounds like my boyfriend, that. He goes for the huge cereal bowl, four toasts (peanut butter or cheez whiz) or two toasted bagels, sliced, with cream cheese. I don't know how he does it. As for me I usually stick to a cookie or two, sometimes with a sip of milk straight from the carton. *g*
Popcorn is always a winner, esp kettle corn. I also love string cheese, graham crackers with peanut butter or yogurt with graham crackers and frozen strawberries mixed in. However, the chocolate pumpkin brownies I made last night will keep me satisfied for awhile :)
Far from homemade, but my favorite is Cup Noodle.
I'm with your friend, mangabanga -- toast with butter and cinnamon-sugar is a favorite of mine.
I love whole grain bread with seeds galore for this, so I pretend it's healthy! And four slices is my usual serving.
I am moving into a new house and haven't found the toaster yet . . . must locate it!
rice with sesame oil and dashi. good for all occassions ^^
Cereal is my perennial late-night snack, though sometimes i do love some great bread and olive oil with lebneh.
All of your comments are making me hungry.
I'm a "1 cookie, small cup of milk" gal. If those are lacking, some bread with butter will do. Basically, it has to be carby.
Definitely popcorn! Popped stovetop, of course, in olive oil.
My current favorite seasoning... Caribbean Jerk and sea salt! The Jerk seasoning is so tasty. A little sweet at first, then the fire hits you! Hm, it might be today's afternoon snack!
Garlic & Olive Oil Popcorn

At night I like white bread with butter and sugar, or Nutella, or as cinnamon toast. And a glass of milk. That or a bowl of Puffins cereal.
bread with peanut butter and honey and sea salt and cold cold cold milk.
Blue cheese stuffed olives. yum yum yum.
Or whatever sweets are laying about the house that I can sneak. But also a big fan of cereal. Something so relaxing about eating a bowl while reading a good book and a cup of tea!
Cottage cheese, pickle halves eaten over the sink, cheese, hot cocoa
-Popcorn with melted butter and Chipotle Tabasco Sauce is a movie night staple. Fresh ground pepper and Parmesan is another great combo.
-Frozen blueberries stirred with milk and a splash of half & half until it's slushy, then add sugar and fresh nutmeg to taste. My wife and I rarely buy ice cream since we discovered this.
- I gotta say, nothing really hits the spot like a sourdough english muffin with butter, hot out of the toaster oven.
minty heart-shapes crackers or soft whole wheat bread with jam
All this snack talk is making me peckish.
another for cereal or toast (either sourdough with butter and strawberry jam or raisin pecan with just butter).
Encores. Usually leave a dab of leftovers from dinner in a bowl for late night snack. If temptation does not visit, drop it in the trash the next morning. Plan B is a banana and sone peanut butter.
We'll put it this way, your picture made me hungry. Pickles and olives are my go to snack. I definitely have a savory palate. Excepting of course the pan of brownies I just put in the oven............
I have my pre-bed snack at 9:30pm every day. It is usually a couple of tablespoons of oats, a banana, low fat no salt cottage cheese and/or fat-free Greek yogurt or no sugar added apple sauce with a dash of cinnamon. It keeps me ok till morning. But if I wake up hungry in the middle of the night I'll get me a cup of milk.
I love reading all these comments. I notice most people are posting regular before bed hungry help but there is also the been out super late seeing a band, etc. late night food. I guess that's a different category, but for that nothing is better than eggs and toast. In the days of the Lounge Ax many folks went across the street for chocolate chip pancakes which are very good at 3AM. At home, normal before bed snack would be yogurt or sometimes rice noodles with butter and nutritional yeast. My new favorite evening snack is fresh roasting raw pumpkin seeds in a little butter and sea salt. So delish!
An apple. Or a really, really ripe peach with 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon. Gotta have sweet!
One graham cracker with peanut butter and a small glass of milk, the perfect pre-bed snack to tide me over until morning.
without a doubt, cold buttermilk pancakes. it's why i always make enough for leftovers.
Applesauce, warmed, wih cinnamon. Winter or foggy summer night!
I just reminded myself of dried mango, dried nectarines and medjool dates. I always have some kind of dried fruit in the pantry for pecking.
a slice of decent bread with a smattering of salted butter, and some thin sliced radishes. The salt keeps the bite of the radishes from being too much. I usually eat two slices if I have some herby-rosemary bread.
Good chocolate with a glass of chilled skim milk!
Toasted bread smeared with peanut butter washed down with a glass of milk.
Chocolate chip cookies: Thomas Keller's recipe, in dough form, is a constant resident in my fridge, ready for scooping and baking fresh.
OK, truly late night -- like 11:30 or more requires firing up the grill and making fresh grilled burgers with cheese. Eating them on the deck after the mosquitos have left for the evening -- nothing better!
popcorn made with coconut oil, salt, splenda, and cracked pepper-- savory, sweet, and with a touch of spice.
