- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- We took a boring, outdated, poorly-functioning condo kitchen and made it a cook's delight. We designed the entire kitchen ourselves using Google SketchUp and did much of the physical work ourselves, so it was truly a labor of love.
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- Since our kitchen has no windows, and therefore no natural light, we worked hard to brighten it up by installing lots of under-cabinet, in-cabinet, and overhead lighting. We're so pleased with the result.
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- Anything that generates a lot of heat and smoke. The hood that we installed makes it a real pleasure to be able to sear food without disconnecting the smoke detectors and opening all of the doors and windows in the house.

LOVE THE BACKSPLASH! May I inquire about it?
Thank you! It's a quartzite tile from The Tile Shop called Flagstaff. It was a difficult DIY installation but we're very happy with the look.
Are those luscious soapstone countertops I see? I think the design of this kitchen is great... I think it would look even better with a different color on the wall though. Though, I'm guessing maybe the reddish brown goes with the decor in the rest of your apartment?
@HEYPIELADY Yes, they are soapstone counters. Thank you for the compliment on the design. We agonized over it for a good year before it became a reality - and it was complete change from the U-shaped kitchen we had prior. The wall color we thought worked with the backsplash. We tried probably 20 colors before settling on that one!
This is by far my FAVORITE kitchen in the contest. I love how there's storage galore and a distinct place for everything: the cookbooks, display pieces, a second oven(!). Love the cabinet colors and the hardwood flooring too.
This kitchen is truly fantastic! I'm not usually a fan of warm tones, but the light colored cabinets really brighten it up and the combo works so well. It's warm without being dark. And the lighting in the upper cabinets is great, it looks like little windows up there. The backsplash manages to look modern and a little rustic at the same time. I think this kitchen could have easily gone a direction that made it look typical and cliche, but you made some great aesthetic choices and it turned out beautifully. Love the floor too, what kind of wood is that?
I don't really like the wall colours, sorry. But I love the floors, cabinets and especially the awesome backsplash!!!
I love the look, colors, and the materials used! It lacks a bit of clutter though! :)
Beautiful kitchen!!! What are the appliance brands (including the hood)? - Does your hood vent outside?
@ SonDC - Thank you!!
@HeyNowTex - Your kind words are so nice to hear. That's exactly the feeling that we were trying to achieve. Rustic/modern. The floors are by Carlisle. They are Old Growth Hickory with a tongue oil finish.
@MrsBerg, @ swisscheese - Thanks!
@sharona - Thank you! The range and hood are both BlueStar. The hood does vent to the outside, which required association approval since we're in a condo. The dishwasher is Fisher&Paykel, the fridge is LG, and the microwave drawer is Sharp.
This is the most amazing little kitchen ever! Everything is so well done and beautiful!
Most be lovely to cook in and to live in that house :-)!!!
love all the storage! are the cabinets custom or stock?
@BRANTBACKE - :-D
@BERKELEY.LOVES.GREY - Thanks! They are custom cabinets.
lovelovelove. The backsplash is awesome, the appliances are beautiful, and the cabinets to the ceiling make it look so much more tall and spacious!. Gorgeous.
color of cabinets? Very handsome kitchen.
@KPIES - Thank you!!
@BERYL - Thanks! The cabinet color is Benjamin Moore Metropolitan.
