A friend who studied abroad in Australia showed me this trick years ago. It makes eating a kiwi portable, mess-free, and best of all, extremely fun. It puts a smile on my face every time.
Just slice the kiwi in half and then carefully run a paring knife (or even a butter knife) just under the skin around the circumference. Slice almost all the way down to the bottom without actually breaking through. With a little pressure on the bottom, the fruit of the kiwi will push up and you can happily chow down.
Even if you just want to cut the kiwi into pieces for a fruit salad, this is still one of the easiest ways I've found to peel off the skin without bruising the fruit or making a huge mess.
Do you ever eat kiwis this way?

gotta try this next time. i normally peel and slice the messy way.
also, i was discussing the topic of eating kiwis w/ skin on - has anyone tried this?
i can't imagine the texture - am i missing something here?
Spoon them out, instead of the knife?
one of my friends eats the halves with a spoon. no mess!
That's so funny, I was just going to comment that I've been known to eat kiwis with the skin on if I'm in a hurry or not at a place (e.g. lunch hour) where I can neatly slice it. Believe you me, there's no better way to be "that" person at the office if you're casually munching an entire kiwi.
But, I also hear that's where most of the fiber comes from. I wouldn't disagree. Its not horrible to eat with the skin on- its just a little.. itchier or grittier. And its less messy since you're probably eating it a lot faster than normal.
I'd say invest the extra five minutes in the morning and just peel it before you leave the house.
Unprofessional Cookery
I like the tart flavor of the kiwi peel. But if you end up with a particularly fuzzy bunch, it's probably better to peel them (or try to scrub some of the fuzz off with a sponge).
My mother once showed me an amazing way to make kiwi peeling so much easier: just using a regular y-shaped peeler, go from end to end but just jiggle the peeler ever so slightly from side to side as you bring it down. Kind of a shivery arm type movement. It makes quite a difference!
yes, spooning it out is easier, I think...and less risk for injury.
I finally gave up the fussiness of peeling a kiwi and the subsequent sticky fingers. Now I cut the kiwi in half lengthwise, then carefully cut each half again lengthwise without cutting through the peel (well, mostly not). Then I just eat the fruit out of the peel. When I pack a lunch, I pre-cut the kiwi and pop it into a small Mason jar (of course!).
Yeah, I just use a spoon to scoop it out. It's so much easier than trying to deal with a slippery kiwi in one hand and a knife in the other.
Running a spoon around the perimeter is faster, easier, and safer. You can peel a mango the same way.
I eat kiwis straight out of the peel with a spoon. My host mom from when I lived in France taught me that.
yay for kiwi push-ups. straight into the lunchbox.
As an Australian I've never seen that method. The go to method for eating kiwi fruit hee is to slice in half and then eat it straight out of the peel using a spoon. The skin is effectively a cup for my kiwi goodness. Supermarkets and fruit shops even have these cool plastic half knife/half spoon things that you can take with you when you want to eat your kiwi fruit.
I ALWAYS eat the peel of the kiwi, even though my sister says it has the texture of a hairy armpit... haha!
I eat kiwifruit like apples - peels and all. The easiest way to eat them without the peel is to cut them in half crosswise and eat with a spoon. I only peel them with a peeler if preparing for others who might not be so keen on the skin/peel.
Add me to the spoon group. One of my favorite office snacks, so easy and refreshing!
This is how I always cut kiwis, only I swivel a spoon around the edge to separate it instead of a knife. You don't lose any kiwi that way.
I cut in half, then slice a sliver off the bottom of each half. Run the knife around the inside of the peel and you've freed the flesh from the peel. I cut each half lengthwise into quarters if serving as a snack, or slice horizontally into thin rounds if adding to a salad.
i always eat with a spoon cut in half but that is kind of messy for me. Maybe I am just too much of a slob. I will have to try this it seems like it might be a bit less messy. I think my spoons aren't sharp enough and thats why i make a mess.
Sometimes ill cut it in half again so its 4 wedge type things (at kind of an angle to avoid those hard... things at the bottom and top) then just bite out the contents of the wedges.
As long as it's an organic kiwi, I just eat it with the skin on. Way simpler, more fiber, and honestly you can hardly tell, especially if it's mixed in with yogurt or something else.
i love kiwis with skin! i eat them just as you would eat an apple. strange at first but now i really enjoy it.
We call'em gorilla balls!
I also learned the spoon method in New Zealand.
I never thought about that. I love kiwi and sometimes I take fruits to my job for snacks but I always avoid the kiwis because of the mess. Now I can do it!
Okay, I'm kinda tripping out because I thought everybody ate kiwis with a spoon. Slice it in half and spin a spoon around the inside edge. Voila! No wasted flesh, no juice dripping down your wrists. Trying to peel a kiwi to me is almost like trying to peel a grape-- err I mean, some other small fruit where you don't eat the skin.
I've always eaten the peel on kiwis! If you scrub them well when you wash them, they lose most of the fuzz (kind of like a peach!). I find that the tartness of the peel really balances out the super sweetness of the kiwi. I found out in the fall that I was allergic and now that summer's on it's way, I'm missing them.
Spoon.
kiwi halves + spoon = better.

Spooner here as well, except instead of cutting them in half, I just cut off a bit of the top and spoon out the rest.
