Small kitchens that work well sometimes take some design ingenuity. These kitchens under stairs are no exception:
Fitting a kitchen in under the stairs introduces a whole new layer of complexity when laying out its functions. What goes under the lowest part of the stair? What needs the coveted space with the most generous headroom?
Fitting it all in as if an intricate puzzle makes it oh so fun to study the examples above. We particularly admire the first image. The linear kitchen under the stairs has the dishwasher located at the lowest spot on the stair - an appliance at which you're generally leaning over to load/unload.
Do you see a kitchen under the stair as a great way to squeeze into an underused space or do you see it as rendering the kitchen unusable? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

My aunt and uncle have an ancient house in Milwaukee that used to have a cabinet with a secret passageway and staircase (!!!!) inside it under the stairs. As a kid, it was the coolest thing I had ever seen in a house. Sadly, they did some remodeling and had to seal it up. But it was epic in its day.
#7 (bottom center) is Thom Filicia's lake house kitchen - since it's only attributed to some random blog I thought I would point that out. I recognized it right away from a spread in Domino.
The first picture is the Federal Café in Barcelona! Love the café, one of the loveliest, most creative cafés in the city.
I think it's a neat look. I hope there's no way for floor debris to fall into the kitchen from the stairs past the landing in #7, though....
In a situation like #2 and #5, I'm worried about stove ventilation. I much prefer examples like #8 that place the stove and range hood on a full wall. Great ideas!
Lepidoptry, I lived in a four-plex with a similar design to #7, and even though I never noticed dirt from the "open" risers falling onto table or other surfaces, it still always bothered me... Lived in that apt. for two years...
