This is not your typical kitchen, your mother's kitchen, or perhaps the kitchen of anyone you know, but it is the kitchen designer Steven Gambrel imagined for Flan and Oisa Kittredge of Six Degrees of Separation.
Bizzi & Partners, developer of the new Setai — high-rise hotel/condo near the Empire State Building — hosted this years Design Visions: Cinema Style! Encouraged by co-sponsor, the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting, designers chose their favorite New York movies and designed over-the-top apartments with the movie's stars as their imagined clients.
Six Degrees of Separation's starring couple, Fran and Oisa, are art dealers and art-centric. They go out a lot, but entertain a lot as well. In response to their lifestyle, the Gambrel inhabits the kitchen with as much color, texture and beauty to support whatever food might eventually show up. When the dining room is being used for cocktails or display purposes only, there is a huge and lush colorful silk curtain to pull across and entirely obscure the kitchen entirely.
Color appears in the form of green succulents, bright blue bottles from the last remaining 'Seltzer Guy' in Brooklyn, and an incredible pair of dining room tables — large wood tabletops resting on sawhorses, lined with Florentine paper, and sealed to look like an extravagant marble collage. The result is a few parts sensory-overload, and many parts sensual and inspirational.
