I'm seldom without a package or two of Trader Joe's Middle Eastern Flatbread in my freezer. These chewy, tasty little breads resemble a thick tortilla, come in white or whole wheat and have dozens of uses. Read on for a few ideas and my favorite way to toast them up that makes them even tastier!
I usually store my flatbreads in the freezer to keep them fresh; it's easy to just pry off an individual bread as needed. You can pop them into a toaster oven where they'll thaw and begin to puff up or if you have a gas stove, try using my favorite method. Simply place the frozen bread directly on the burner over a very low flame. Every 10 or 15 seconds, flip the bread until it is slightly charred and completely thawed out. (Use a tongs if your fingers are sensitive to heat.) This should take about 2 minutes. The bread will be crisp and smoky from the char on the outside and soft and chewy in the middle.
From here you can cut them into triangles and use them to scoop up any kind of dip such as hummus or salads. You can roll them or fold them into all sorts of sandwiches. Favorites for kids are pb&j or hot dog roll ups. You can also skip the stovetop char and pan fry the breads either singularly or with some delicious sharp cheddar cheese layered between two breads. Cut into thick triangles and serve with tomato chutney.
• Find them: Available in the bread section of most Trader Joe's stores, $1.99 for a pack of six. (You can also find similar breads in the frozen section of any Indian or Mediterranean grocery.)
How do you use these delicious, versatile breads?

I make pizzas with them!!! They are totally a staple in my kitchen:

I used to love these, but they changed their recipe recently (6-12 months ago?) and they aren't nearly as fluffy as they used to be. I still buy them, but they just seem more "gluey" than they used to be.
I gotta try those... My favorite flatbread brand right now is Flatout. They are pretty big and oblong, so they make great wraps. They come in different flavors and they are low calorie too! I wish they were cheaper though...
I like the spicy spinach pizza's from TJ's. But I really don't find them spicy at all. And there's no cheese on them either. So I guess it's just spinach on flatbread. But toasted in the toaster oven, they go great with just about everything!
I've been using Trader Joes' corn tortillas for what sounds like the same purpose (and they're gluten-free!). I brush them with bean dip or olive oil, top with tomatoes, goat cheese, and chopped garlic, and bake at 450 until they're crisped. Really good, and with this occasional snack I don't miss pizza so much.
These are a definite staple in my house! I heat them under the broiler or in the toaster oven at work, for a warm side to my cold salad or as a snack to have with hummus or baba.
We also use them for "pita" sandwiches at least once a week. I love that they aren't as dry as most pocket-pitas.
Ooh, always happy to get a recommendation of a new Trader Joe's product! I really like their flour tortillas (the ones they call "hand-rolled" or something like that)--I also keep them in the freezer and use them for many of the uses described above. These sound similar, but a little heartier, which is appealing. (Come to think of it, kind of like a cross between the flour tortillas and the frozen nan, another favorite...)
I agree with TrevorS' comment above. I buy them all the time and I've noticed that I sometimes now get a batch that's flat and hard and not as fluffy. I keep mine in the fridge and my favorite way to eat them is to pop them for a minute in the toaster oven on the "toast" setting - they'll inflate like a puffer fish - so cool to watch! Take them out (beware the hot steam), add some sliced salami, fold them in two and eat them. Soooo good! They're great to take along on a hike as well.
Make your own flatbread to have on hand! This recipe is super simple: http://littlebluehen.com/?p=1220
I portion out the dough and keep it in the fridge all week for dinners.
We stuff these flatbreads with chicken salad or make breakfast burritos out of them.
These are great! I use them as a vehicle for zucchini, basil and cheese:

yum! tonight i'm making a pizza with fig compote and laughing cow cheese
I have used them to make pizzas, too, or just melted cheese with fresh herbs! I haven't had them in a while but now I'm craving them. Thanks!
I'll pop them in my toaster oven for a bit, let them puff up, a smear of goat cheese and a drizzle of honey...maybe some thyme, and it is my favorite dessert!
Yes, Trader Joe's did go to a different supplier on these. They used to be 8 pieces in the bag for $1.99...new ones are 6 to a bag.
Anyone else notice that TJs is changing up the qty or piece of things and in some case raising the price as well? Lots of Hidden inflation at TJs!
