We love seeing our readers' freshened-up kitchens! Today's kitchen renovation story comes from Maria in Vancouver, BC. Her kitchen renovation is really inspiring, as it falls in that challenging in-between category — she wanted to do more than just paint her cabinets and hang some artwork (a $200 job), but she didn't have the budget for a full gut renovation of her old and challenging kitchen. So she worked a modest, realistic budget, and this plus some elbow grease got her a serious amount of upgrade!
Read on to see her kitchen before the upgrade, and for all the details of what she did, including a budget breakdown.

Maria's Kitchen Story
We had been in our house for 2 years and our inefficient kitchen was becoming more and more of a thorn in my side. I love to cook and entertain and my kitchen was not a useable space — and it was just very blah and dingy looking. My biggest pain point was that the oven had about a 4-inch space on each side between the oven and the counter space — this drove me NUTS!!!
We couldn't afford my dream kitchen renovations, so I did what I called a facelift. We modified the existing upper cabinets to fit in a working range hood, modified the lower cabinets to get rid of the 4-inch gap on either side of the oven, replaced the floor with a vinyl tile, built new cabinets around the fridge, installed a bi-fold door for the pantry, installed a dishwasher, new oven and hood range, new kitchen faucet, new counters, painted the walls and cabinets and my favourite aesthetic piece — the kitchen backsplash. We also purchased an IKEA butcher block island that is perfect for my kids to have meals at and do crafts — it also has shelves to house all my cookbooks.

Cost of "Facelift" Renovation
Maria and her dad did all the grunt work. "It's very handy," she says, "to have jack of all trades for a father!" (Do note that these costs are in Canadian dollars.)
• Appliances: oven, range hood, dishwasher - $2,200
• Countertops: $1,000
• Floors: $200
• Backsplash: $175
• Paint: $150
• Cabinet hardware: $100
• IKEA cabinets & bifold door: $1,000
• IKEA island: $575
• Electrical: $500
• Faucet: $200
• Total: $6,100

Maria's Renovation Favorites
What was your favorite improvement?
My favourite aesthetic improvement is the backsplash. I installed it all by myself and was swearing as I grouted itty-bitty tiles at 2am in the morning, but I love how they turned out. I chose the hexagon tile because it reminded me of the tile in the first apartment I shared with my husband.
My favourite functional improvement was the electrical upgrade — being able to make toast and coffee at the same time is a very good thing!
Which one gave you the most "bang for your buck?"
Hard to choose, since we did everything so economically. I would have to say splurging on the IKEA butcher block island. I hemmed and hawed over it for a long time as $575 was a lot to spend at the time (especially since I had a perfectly fine kitchen table to use) and it wasn't a necessary piece to make the kitchen function.
But the island provides storage, seating for my kids to eat and do crafts at while I'm preparing a meal, more counter space (especially for baking!) and provides a place to gather while entertaining. I didn't expect to get as much use from it as I have.

Floors! I need those floors! Where are they from?
Wow! What a difference, great job!
This is really well done for 6k. Love the backsplash. Would also like to know about those floors! They look good for $200!
The floors are vinyl groutable tile by TrafficMaster...I purchased them on sale from Home Depot. I have to say, they are very durable and we were able to put them on top of our existing linoleum floor. We completed the kitchen a year ago and the floor really has held up...and it is comfortable to stand on!
The reno looks so great! I really like how the makeover looks totally doable for an average family. It wasn't a complete overhaul, but it was enough to feel like a new kitchen. A completely realistic and amazing transformation!
Those kids are so cute they'd make ANY kitchen look great!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
very nice. this is similar to my needs and budget so the change you've made is really inspiring.
Really wonderful facelift. What did you choose for the countertops?
Can you tell me the source of your backsplash tile? I have the exact same floor tiles (did you use grout?), white cabinets and dark countertops in my kitchen. We were contemplating hex tile as a backsplash option and I really like the way you have made it all work together. It looks fantastic!!!
Yes! More posts like these where renovations are accomplished with a lot of DIY and a realistic budget, and fewer where the homeowner just hires a designer to figure it all out.
Thanks, everyone!
@DIANEP - the countertop is a charcoal gray textured laminate from Home Depot, with a square edged finish.
@ANARENS - I bought the hexagon tile on clearance at a local tile store. I believe they are Dal Tile - I opted for the glossy finish as I wanted to make sure that the tiles were easy to keep clean and I did use grout. I have some clearer shots of the backsplash here:

Well done! I have the same IKEA butcher block island and at the time I purchased it, it was definitely at the higher end of my budget, but totally worth it.
Beautiful children as well!
Love that you posted the budget.
Very nice kitchen, super cutiepie kids. What kind of fridge do you have? It looks like you changed the color - can you explain?
I'm doing a similar (yet smaller scale) facelift at the moment that I am going to start this weekend. The main goal is to shoehorn a dishwasher in a kitchen that has 7' of base cabinets. I have just about everything ready to go. Demolition of the current starts on Saturday! I will take some before and after photos that will maybe end up on the site :)
@PARNASSUS - the fridge is the same, nothing done to it. It is a stainless steel counter depth fridge.
wow! what a kitchen! Looks like the ideal place to socialize with friends and neighbors. Great job, Maria.
This is a great renovation, well done. I love that you kept the original cabinets, I have a soft spot for them (and have the same ones).
Hm... for some reason I really like the handles (the ones that seem like cup pulls... I say "for some reason" because I don't usually like cup pulls). Congrats on your kitchen! One of the more tempting sections in ikea, and all the more inaccessible to me (a renter).

p.s. Gorgeous kids...
GORGEOUS kids! 4 questions: please give deets on the hood, faucet, pantry drawer pulls, dining room paint color (I'm in Canada too). Really nice job.
The range hood is from Ikea, the faucet is MOEN (purchased at Rona in the discounted bin), drawer pulls were from Home Depot and dining room paint is Benjamin Moore Metropolis.
I really do love this, considering such a tight budget... but I think you should change the hardware on the cabinets and drawers to something a little more modern. That is an inexpensive way to really pull the look together.
I think @alllebasii is a little jealous. The hardware is perfect as it is simple and timeless. More modern hardware would be too much; would look like the kitchen is trying too hard to appear modern. The look is absolutely "together" in every way.
@interiordezine - not jealous at all, just giving my point of view as a designer. clearly you have never seen my kitchen....
