There are so many things we love about this kitchen. The copper pots, the unexpected forest green color, the charcoal grey cabinets, and the way the subway tile looks like the inside of an actual, slightly gritty subway, even though it's new. We'll even cop to liking the donkey head.
This kitchen was built to be a workhorse. It's owned by Bronson van Wyck, who runs an event design firm. He claims to entertain twice a week.
We loved this quote referring to the aesthetic van Wyck and his designer were going for: "The kitchens we liked most were not actually designed to be seen. We ended up creating one that’s supposed to be at the back of a French or English manor home." This room does have an old-world feeling; we could see the butler and the cook milling around back here. The kitchen is stately and yet has a warm, well-loved look about it.
Plus, how beautiful is that green? We don't see that very often, and it's so pretty paired with the white tiles and cool, black shelves and countertops. There's such a great mismatched quality to this room—wood, copper, limestone, chalkboard (on the fridge). It's modern and rough-and-tumble at the same time. And the drawer pulls on the island are from an old library card catalogue!

Straw Mat from The ...

My kind of kitchen. :)
My goodness that subway tile is serious. This kitchen is so stout and strong - Not my usual taste in colours, but the elements in it certainly appeal - the strong dark wood island, open shelving and layout. Cozy, workable and yet oozing character.

So. Beautiful.
This is exactly what I've always wanted and never known... that I've always wanted.
There must be a separate pantry somewhere, though?
I was like, okay where is the donkey? I kinda jumped when I saw it. LOL, not my thing!
I LOVE everything but the donkey. What a beautiful kitchen. I love that's not a display piece, but is soooo beautiful.
Wow.
Great space! I love the unique variety of textures and surfaces. It looks comfortable and very functional - the perfect combination.
Love the kitchen, but have a question.
Are there any adverse affects of having potential chalk dust floating around a kitchen?
I really like the chalkboard paint. And I like that it can give your kids something to do while cooking. But, is chalk toxic enough over time to do any damage?
Oh, forgot.
I think they did a great job with it, but still can't decide if that green and the slate blue-grey go well together ... especially with the white subway tile. I like the tile and the slate together ... maybe find another color that complements it a bit more. Otherwise, it's rad. Love the island, cabinets, stove, etc.
ErikTheRed: I made a large board that's 1/2 chalkboard and 1/2 magnet board. Bought the dustless (...) chalk. It's a mess, even with a chalk ledge to catch dust and an eraser to clean the chalkboard. I will never again use anything chalkboard in the house. Too messy.
A very male looking kitchen! But I like it. Love the weight of the wooden island, the way things are tucked away. Agree about the chalk dust, that could get messy - whiteboard and dry markers would have been more practical, but the black is admittedly more attractive. Great, deep sense of colour.
Hope there's a decent and accessible stepladder in there, because some of the stuff is veeery high up - I wouldn't fancy climbing up and down some rickety steps balancing plates in one hand, clinging on for dear life with the other....
This is very nearly the kitchen I had in the early '80s. No subway tile, though.
Beautiful. And unique. The green works for me in this kitchen.
whats with the donkey head? are we going for some kind of oldworld shakespeare reference? the things magazines shove in as props...
Get your ass off the counter. :)
