Last week we asked if you needed a kitchen makeover. Lots of you do, apparently, because we already have an inbox full of submissions! Here's our first attempt to offer a little advice and inspiration to a kitchen in need of a makeover. How would you help improve this kitchen?
Name: Erin and Brendan
Location: Inner Sunset area of San Francisco, California
Rent or own? Rent
Read on for what Erin and Brendan want in their kitchen, plus their constraints. We offer a few tips, ideas, and paint colors. How would you make over this kitchen?
What does your kitchen need? Color inspiration (we HATE the nauseating butter yellow), a sense of warmth, flooring ideas, cabinet treatments (not paint), an island next to the stove?
What are your limitations? Can't paint cabinets, small(ish) budget
Erin and Brendan, you guys are among the lucky ones who can paint — this is a huge advantage! You also have wonderful storage (how about that fold-out ironing board?) and so much counter space. This is a great kitchen! We also really like your red EAT sign over the stove; it's hard to see it well in these photos, but we like it. We took inspiration from this, as well as your desire for warmth in the kitchen, and came up with a few ideas.
Paint is going to make a huge difference, of course. We suggest upgrading to a more definitive and committed sort of yellow; perhaps a warm, orangey-yellow. We have a color below, but of course grab swatches and try them out; something that looks good on the screen may not look great in the kitchen. (Our advice is always to go a shade or two lighter than you think you want; it's always more intense on the wall.) We would temper the warm yellow with a neutral gray on the lower half of the wall behind the stove. Then paint all the trim a bright, warm white. Painting the trim alone will make a huge difference; it's our secret weapon in every home we've painted!
The red sign and yellow walls make us want to go vintage industrial with the rest of this kitchen, with striped vintage-feeling towels, a stainless steel cart next to the stove for much-improved cooking flow, and some other pops of red.
Our biggest suggestion, besides painting? Leave the cabinets alone. If you can't paint them, cut your losses and improve the rest of the kitchen. Let the cabinets (and brown flooring) fade into the background as much as possible.
Makeover Recipe:
• Paint the kitchen a warmer, brighter, more committed shade of yellow
• Paint all the trim bright white.
• Accent the white and yellow with a neutral gray behind the stove
• Add a kitchen cart next to the stove for easier cooking.
• De-clutter the fridge and move cereal boxes and unnecessary papers to a cupboard.
• Take inspiration for accent touches from the red EAT sign and yellow color.
Inspiration:
• Kitchen Spotlight: Leslie's Sunny Yellow - Another basic rental kitchen without much to change — but a coat of yellow paint really worked wonders.
Suggested Resources:
• Paint: Benjamin Moore 2023-40 Sunburst and 2124-20 Trout Gray (looks taupe above but is a warm gray in person). Plus a bright, all-purpose white.
• Kitchen cart: FLYTTA stainless steel cart, $159 at IKEA
• Rug: 4x6 Murphy Rug in Maize, $79.95 at Crate & Barrel
• Towels: Martha Stewart Collection, $11.99 for 3 towels
• For countertop storage: Red vintage canisters, $24 at Maven Vintage
Those are just a few suggestions to start your inspiration process. Please check back in and show us what you do with your kitchen makeover. Readers -- what would you do with this kitchen?

Another way to add a pop of colour to the cabinets could be an over-the-door towel bar or towel hook(s), which could be handy near the sink anyways. Also, some plants on the window sill could be nice too.
I second all the ideas presented above. For the floors, how about an indoor/outdoor mat? Something made out of bamboo or something synthetic so that it's easy to wipe up spills? World Market has some bright, cheery, inexpensive ones that could work in a yellow/white/red kitchen.
A couple more ideas-
*bright, tiled backsplash along the counter and behind the stove
*a bright white or red valance/curtains
*a funky but bright light fixture
I think your own"Orange like a Clementine" kitchen gallery has some great inspiration for this space - especially this one http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/kitchen-tours/kitchen-spotlight-meghan-shawns-vibrant-orange-071046?image_id=4371
Maybe a softer orange would be easier to live with - I posted a few at www.kitchenclarity.com
Clarityk has good advice! I like the idea of the yellow, too. My own kitchen is black and white, but I had the good fortune of being able to paint my cabinets.
They can have new-looking cabinets. The solution is contact paper! I think I've seen it used on appliances here on Apartment Therapy, and lifehacker has a tutorial on how to do stainless contact paper on appliances. http://lifehacker.com/397334/refurbish-appliances-with-stainless-steel-contact-paper
I don't see why stickers or contact paper couldn't be used on the cabinets.
Also, with the floor, an industrial style carpet remnant of area rug could be cut to the shape of the room and put over it. Flor tiles could also be put down. Here's a post on the topic: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good-questions/good-questions-funky-kitchen-flooring-solution-003946
Temporary vinyl tiles can also work on the floor: http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/kitchen-spotlight/look-project-runway-stars-excellent-tiny-kitchen-070632
Maybe something similar could be done with the cabinets without damaging them?
One cool idea is to put wall decals on the cabinets, as was done with this armoire: http://freshome.com/2008/04/09/change-the-look-of-your-armoire-with-a-sticker/
That same look on the cabinets could look great with an all bright white kitchen with red and wood accents. We've seen, after all, how good white and wood can be together.

Here is the white and wood post! I coudn't find it before.

Can you temporarily remove the ironing board from that shallow closet? That just begs to be a spice cabinet! Install narrow shelves for the spices. Maybe even take the door off (but store it someplace else with the ironing board) and paint the inside of the cabinet a contrasting color, like turquoise or red, if you go with the orangey-suggested kitchen.
Standupstapler, it might be a bit of a nightmare to painstakingly cut out contact paper to fit over all the grooves, angles and edges of the cabinets...
Definitely paint all the trim and doors white. Then pick a color for your walls. I think a nice turquoise would look good with the white trim, the brown cabinets, and the floor. I wouldn't try to do anything to the cabinets; you probably wouldn't be satisfied with the results. At the most, take a couple of the doors off and display your nicer serving pieces. Then you could add another color through your linens and accessories. I think red of your "eat" sign would go nicely with the turquoise. You could get a more colorful mat for the floor, a canister to hold your utensils near the stove, etc.
I mean more of a blue-teal than turquoise, sorry.
I love a blank space! I agree with jamiealyse on the turquoise teal idea. I put together an idea board on polyvore. I, of course, have no idea if this couple like deco but it may just help as a color inspiration!

I am not one for dark, rich colors in the kitchen, but I would suggest painting from floor to chair railing (behind the stove) an unusual blue/green-grey/teal...and repeat that color on the "backsplash", from counter-top to cabinets. Paint all the doors and trim a semi-gloss white, as well as the area above the chair railing. The deep color will ground and define the area.
2 colors below, perhaps what jamiealyse was thinking:

these are links to ikea legs and bases, including red trestle supports (cheap, and another bit of red) which could be fitted with a butcher block top, and placed next to the stove for food prep and as a safe surface for hot pans.

yes, as already stated, clear the fridge doors but if you really need magnets, make some with great graphics (use art postcards or kids' flashcards).
I would love to see a poster like this: http://www.polishposter.com/html/poster0605.html
above the stove. It'll be fine, I've had art in my kitchen for 30 years.
and for your floors (this is listed as kitchen compatible), if you have the budget: http://www.flor.com/service/flor/shop/item/Feelin-Groovy/1391302500-100573.html
or: http://www.bolon.com/flooring/#/EN/products/collections/spektra/spektra2/
oh, and if you get the poster, put EAT over the door...
Weird. I have the same cabinets and virtually the same stove. (Same black and white, different clocks.)
With your kitchen, I'd be inclined to paint everything white and pick up color cues for art and accessories from your floral dish towel, if that's something you like.
My ideas:
I would leave the cabinets as they are
Would paint the walls a light blue gray, except the lower half of the wall in the corner where the stove is. That would be a neutral gray as suggested.
Paint all the trim white
Paint the doors a neutral gray
I would move the stove to the hall in front of the door and put a small mirror above it. Not necessarily feng-shui but it would feel nice and comfortable
A white shelf all around the wall in the stove corner, at eye level
A STENSTORP or a BEKVÄM (both from IKEA) kitchen card next to the stove. Or a shelving unit like UTBY (IKEA) if you have room for that. I have one and it has lots of space for everything plus the counter space.
De-clutter the fridge
Put the EAT sign above the door (in the 2nd picture)
If you like rugs in the kitchen choose something with red on it
You can display one or two small everyday appliances on the counter.
Towels and other accents on the red or blue gray range.
Good luck.
meant to be specific: picket fence white is a great white...ralph lauren paint.
a correction, semi-gloss only one the woodwork, not on the upper walls. that should be a washable flat, maybe an eggshell finish.

The little, lonely stove makes me so sad. Maybe a shelf like this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20105628 or this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10120573 placed between the top of the stove and the "EAT" sign would help ameliorate the bareness of not having a backsplash or range hood.
Can you switch the fridge and stove? You would then be able to use your counterspace to prep for cooking better! If you don't want to paint everything- just add a complementary color- like red? Blue? to go with this.
Hi everyone! Thank you for all your great suggestions!
We really like the turquoise/teal idea for the walls above the chair rail and along the backsplash. We're thinking something along the lines of Benjamin Moore's Poolside Blue (http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-13463548100242_2062_23550776) with bright white trim and doors.
We'd love to put in a black and white checkered floor, but sadly, the floor is quite uneven, and I don't think we will have enough clearance under the main door for anything more than 1/8" thick. The Ikea Egeby rug (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30025400) seems like it would camouflage the linoleum well, and on the cheap.
I think the stove would be real happy to have a kitchen cart buddy, and the stainless steel one will be perfect (I'm a messy cook :) )
We LOVE the red canisters and vintage poster suggestions- those will really warm the place up.
I hope to update everyone with pictures in a month or so! (I promise to de-clutter in the mean time!) THANKS AGAIN!
I like the poolside blue color you picked out a lot. I'm excited to see the end result! Good luck!
