I first spotted these labeled chalkboard cupboards last year on Apartment Therapy, where they sparked a spirited discussion. Some people loved the quirky charm, others hated the hipster vibe, while a few even questioned the practicality of using chalk in the kitchen (chalk dust and all). What do you think?
My opinion? It might not be for everyone, but I think it's an easy, cheap DIY to give your cupboards a creative update, particularly for renters who have a little flexibility.

A cupboard full of ashtrays? Barf.
I dig the creative element of it, but I would also question the practicality. If you're leaning up against the counters while you chop veg or wash dishes, you're just going to smear the chalk from the lower cabinets all over your clothes. Chalk dust in food doesn't sound too appetizing either. Haha, I just noticed a cabinet under the sink says "Washing sh*t" and then "bug spray." I'm guessing they aren't going for appetizing.
How is chalkboard paint a flexible option for a renter? Despite the possibility that this kind of labeling system could be considered useful or creative for the renter, I think most landlords would keep the security deposit after seeing this.
Unless it's a guest house, this is kinda lame and tacky. Especially when one cupboard is labeled "washing shit". Even in the guest house case, you'd be better served by using open shelving.
Yeah, I'm not a fan. Sort of cutesy, but in the same way every. project. ever. done. with chalkboard paint is. I'm "meh" on chalkboard paint anyway, and it's so overhyped, as if it's the miracle cure for every decorating quandary...like other people have said, I definitely wouldn't want to be accidentally smudging all the time (which would inevitably happen).
I guess it's just that I USE my kitchen cabinets, like, all the time, and I can't imagine these would look anything other than messy in my house in no time flat.
I agree with CASEOFTORNADOS - ashtrays are definitely yuck, but even more so, who has that many!?
Pretty unnecessary, since you know, you're the one who uses your kitchen and thus know where everything is.
The whole kitchen is just awful. Imagine being invited over to dinner and the first thing you see in your friends' kitchen is an entire cabinet proudly labeled "bug spray." Ew.
We really need to work on long-term memory if these are considered practical.
Oh, I tried having chalkboard walls and it was a dust nightmare. It was filthy no matter how hard I tried. I couldn't imagine my kitchen being one big chalkboard.
This reminds me of that part in One Hundred Years of Solitude where the townspeople, suffering from sleeplessness lose their ability to remember the names of the most basic things (e.g. - cow, window) and must affix notes to everything to remind themselves.
Then, with further lack of sleep, they forget how to read.
I'm primarily turned off by how dark it makes the kitchen. No matter how practical it may be, making matte black the primary kitchen color isn't my thing. I agree that open shelving can do the same organizationally, without the heavy, dark feeling.
But maybe if you have a cupboard full of ashtrays, there is a reason why you don't have open shelves...
ha! my first thought was, who the hell still has ashtrays?
and yeah, I hate the chalkboard trend.
I choose Door #4 (bottom right). Hey, it's gotta be better than the alternatives, eh?
Chalkboard paint has it's uses but this ain't one of 'em. Closest its ever gonna get to my food prep area is [perhaps] the inside of a pantry door. Speaking of which....where's the food in this kitchen?
While I like chalkboard paint (I'm helping my parents redecorate their guest room, and we're painting a chalkboard wall by the desk area) I don't really like this application. A chalkboard wall can be great for writing down things that change often (like a weekly meal plan), but it doesn't seem practical for cupboards.
I think if the contents of your cabinets change often enough for you to need to write them out in chalk, you've got problems. This is where I put the bowls when I moved in, and that remains where I put the bowls until I move to a new place. I'm not going to need to label my cupboards for more than a week or so before learning where everything is and no longer needing labels.
It might be fun for people who like to draw random doodles in chalk. Especially if they have neon colored chalk. That's gotta be messy, though. I probably wouldn't bother drawing anything because it just means I've gotta clean it up later, and all of the chalk dust is going to fall right onto my clean dishes drying by the sink.
if you have an entire cupboard full of ashtrays, you have bigger problems than whether or not people like your chalkboard cabinet paint.
For a home, I think not great. BUT, for summer camp kitchens where kids are assigned rotating shifts in the kitchen as their weekly capers.. EXCELLENT!
I think it's fun. Guess I'm the only one.
You know where this might actually work? A restaurant or cafe.
Not. A. Fan. Maybe they live in the bayou and this is a funny joke, but I can't understand why you would need a whole cabinet dedicated to bug sprays, OR why that cabinet would be in the kitchen. Yuck yuck yuck. Also, I know I'm old-fashioned, but I would feel really uncomfortable having guests over with a curse word prominently displayed in my kitchen. You never know what offends who and why. Better safe than sorry.
You need a whole cabinet for ashtrays?
