All Brande wanted was a kitchen that felt clean, inviting and bright. But as she tells The Kitchn, that was not what came with her house. After living with the outdated kitchen for 12 years, she and her husband were finally about able to make some changes, most of which they did themselves to keep the project within budget. Jump below to read more and see the 'After' photos:
I wanted a kitchen that felt clean, inviting and bright. That was NOT what came with the house. After 12 years we were finally about able to make some changes, and we are in love with the results. Without funds to change the footprint of the room, we worked within the confines of the walls as they stood, as well as the adjoining laundry room and half bath, which also benefited from this facelift. Counter space and cabinet space were issues, so a corner cabinet with fixed shelves, and 2 cabinets with drawers were placed in the corner which before held a microwave stand and bookshelf. The space between the stove and fridge, which before held a white plastic cart on wheels where I stored pot lids and some baking pans is now a more usable space with a cabinet with three drawers and a counter top, which gives me that little bit more counter that's needed when cooking. Removing an unused utility sink in the laundry room, and moving the existing cabinet to the wall in the adjoining half bath gave us space to get a custom built floor-to-ceiling pantry, which was well worth the money. The kitchen previously had a fixture with two long fluorescent lights, which was removed, and the new lighting consists of 5 recessed lights on a dimmer. The old vinyl sheet floor was replaced with vinyl tile, which when grouted with a dark grey, looks similar to actual tile, but without the price. The new flooring went not only in the kitchen but in the laundry room, half bath, and small closet that contains the hot water heater. (Adura Oasis, color: Cloud Cover) The old laminate counter tops, which were stained and scratched, were replaced with Silestone quartz (color: Cygnus). They're heat, scratch and stain resistant, which are the benefits they tell you in the store, but I love the cool, smooth surface that cleans like a dream. I never felt like the previous plastic-y surfaces were ever truly germ-free. Walls and all existing cabinets were painted to freshen up the room, and I could not be happier with the grey - who says grey has to be drab? All paint was from Sherwin Williams. (Walls: Shoji White; Upper cabinets: Amazing Gray; Lower cabinets: Grizzle Gray) The old metal sink was replaced with an enameled cast iron one by Kohler, that I'm very happy I didn't have to lift! The divide between the 2 bowls in the sink is low, something they call "Smart Divide" which we love and makes the sink seem even larger than the previous, when in fact it's the same size. Hinges, knobs and handles are satin nickel, which is also the finish of the new sink faucet. My mother, who also made the curtains, found the knobs and handles at a surplus store for $1 each, which was an amazing find and big money saver. The project took several months to complete; we didn't use a general contractor, and did as much of the labor as we could to save on cost. The most disruptive times were installing and painting the new cabinets (we hired someone else to do the walls and existing cabinets), and having the floor installed - having the refrigerator in the living room for 2 days was heaven for my husband, but I was thankful when it was time to move everything back in!Thanks for sharing, Brande! Elizabeth Apron fro...

I cry when I see people painting over wood. I would have just bought and stained to match a butcher block counter and worked with the woodsy vibe. Put in a hanging fern over the sink and a big stainless globe pendant with cut-outs, painted the walls Swiss Coffee, and added a full curtain with green and blue tones to balance all the wood. I think the biggest + in this remodel is the de-cluttered counter. To each his own, of course!
Very cute! I love the pink Le Creuset pieces. :o]
What a beautiful new kitchen. I just love it. And the curtains are just perfect.
Very nice! Clean and bright. And thank you for taking some 'before' and 'after' shots from the same position!
It is a GREAT update. I know some people hate painting over wood, but I'm guessing that due to the age of those cabinets it would have taken a full-on strip & refinish job to make them look fresh and clean. Being able to sand & paint is MUCH faster.
It looks so updated, and adding the corner cabinet underneath the orphaned wall cabs was smart. I love this kind of makeover - a reasonable budget that returns really great results.
What a fantastic update to your kitchen! It makes me so ill when people scream don't paint over wood....it always depends on the situation. And clearly here it was the right choice. I love wood as well but sometimes it just needs to be painted over.
Your update looks beautiful. ENJOY your new space!
Lovely, clean and fresh! Love the pink dutch oven and countertops. The curtains are a no for me --- too ruffly and serve zero purpose.
Looks great! I love the new cabinet colors.
Great job!
Adorable update that I'm sure will evolve over time!
hmm i'm not so sure about the cabinets. the color changed but that's about it. overall it looks better because it's brighter and cleaning up countertops makes a huge difference. I would change the curtains too... it's bit old fashion (for my taste).
Put me down in the "it's okay to paint wood" camp! Along with EngineerChic, I think that those kinds of cabinets, with all the knots in the wood and the seriously thick and old lacquer that appears to have been used, are not great candidates for refinishing the "natural" way--it likely would have been difficult to achieve a good result.
As for curtains serving "no purpose", speaking as someone who spends hours in front of her kitchen sink, day and night, every week, it is really nice to have something cute there to look at!
The after pictures are so cheery - I love it!
Nice update! The extra storage allowed the owners to declutter. There must have been new lighting (ceiling), as the after pictures are much brighter.
I appreciate the matching before/after pics!
Please tell me where those pink cast iron pieces are from!
Oh, and nice kitchen.
I love wood, but I also love the update! My whole kitchen is wood, knotty alder cabinets, circular-sawn fir floors, cedar t&g on the walls and ceiling. It's a bit much but I was told to "live with it for awhile" before changing anything. Now it would be a major complication to paint or remove anything so I'll be stuck with it for awhile longer. Oh well, at least it's a theme.
I like it--it's bright and open, and not just because there's less clutter. Does that top right drawer drive your crazy, though? Do you have to open your oven to open the drawer?
You... you CRY when you see people painting over wood? Almost twenty children were shot dead today, and you're crying because someone painted their kitchen cabinets? You either need to learn how to use words properly or get your priorities in order.
But to each his own, of course.
weird...I think it's a little too soon to be giving people guilt trips by mentioning the shooting just because someone said they were 'crying' about wood being painted...
Great work!! Kudos to you for working with the existing cabinets. I love the paint colors you've chosen for the cabinets- I really enjoy that look of doing the uppers and lowers different colors. I wish that AT would include more posts of people largely working with what they have, rather than just throwing tons of money at a project. Keep it coming, AT!
Gotta say, I find it a little weird for anyone to cry over another person painting their own property.
Nobody is hurting the wood's feelings by painting over it. The wood does not have feelings. Perhaps the first commenter has too many feelings.
Again, great work!
That kind of wood is fine to paint over, in my opinion. We're not talking about a priceless antique whose patina was destroyed. They can strip and refinish whenever.
Good job brightening up the place!
