You might not think there’s a lot you can do with a rental kitchen, but prepare to be amazed by the total transformation Catharine of Your Modern Couple performed on her previous apartment.
In a world full of white cabinets, we’re loving Catharine’s choice to opt for glossy black. Not only does it stand out, but it hides any imperfections in a way that white just can’t. Plus, we love that Catharine opted to remove the doors for the top cabinets. Keeping them on and painting them black would have run the risk of making the kitchen feel too dark. Instead, the glossy black serve as a great backdrop for her colorful dishes and glassware.
What makes this transformation so impressive is that she didn't update the countertop or the floors (aside from pulling up some carpet!). By making a big statement with the black cabinets Catharine was able to deflect attention from the areas she didn't have control over. The lesson: Don't be afraid to go bold in a rental kitchen.
Catharine also has a great tip for repainting kitchen cabinets. Number them as you remove each drawer and door. That way you'll know where each one belongs when it's time to reattach them. “In our case these cabinets were handmade so each drawer and door was a hair different in size and it was like a puzzle trying to line everything up again,” she says.
Thanks for letting us share your remodel, Catharine!
