There were several things Kitchn reader Megan disliked about her Van Nuys, California kitchen: the lack of counter space, the outdated colors and floor, the chipped countertops, and the general feeling that you were always cramped when you were working in it. So finally, with the help of her dad and brother, she was able to turn it into the kitchen she wanted! See the 'After' photos below:
My Dad, brother, and I all live together in Van Nuys, CA. After a year or so of remodeling other rooms in the house, we finally decided to tackle the kitchen... It took us exactly 9 weeks to do a complete renovation of the space. We gutted it, ripped out the floors, and started from scratch. We were able to increase counter space by switching from a separate stove top and oven to a unit the combines both into one. Also, we installed a floor to ceiling pantry that was a better utilization of space.
... I absolutely love it. I knew I wanted a white kitchen with a dark floor, but we wanted to avoid it looking too country. I think we achieved that goal! Cooking in the new kitchen is such a pleasure. Even though we didn't add any space in terms of square footage, it feels so much bigger than before.
Thanks so much for sharing, Megan!
