It's Cocktail Week on The Kitchn, which has us wondering: how do you keep your liquor at home? Do you hide it away in a cupboard, or do you have it artfully displayed? These homeowners have it out in the open and ready for cocktail hour: what about you?

Straw Mat from The ...

Not a great idea to store alcoholic beverages on top of a radiator (picture #2).
I keep mine out on the low shelf which sits behind my TV console (our room dividers) on the dining table side of things - and I just recently moved our collection there from the kitchen because it was taking up way too much counter space in our very small and very cave-like kitchen (whee, duplex-renter problems). I'm quite happy with the change, and it makes it way more convenient to figure out what I have and what I need to pick up before my next get-together.
i never understood why everyone stores the liquor outside the fridge, most of the europeans do not have an icecube-maker thingy on their fridge, so if you want instant cool drinks, you will have to store the liquor cold...
i can only think of very few drinks that are better if stored at room temperature...
I love the idea of a bar cart but not sure how practical it is for this stage of our lives (a 4yr old in the house).
First: COCKTAIL WEEK AT THE KITCHN!!! Today is the last day of the semester for me (I teach at a college) and this couldn't be better timed. Between taking the edge off, getting in the right mindset for grading, and anticipating the summer ahead, I foresee some serious cocktailing this week. I'm excited to see what you've got planned for us!
Now, erm, to the question asked. As a stop-gap measure once my collection of bottles got a bit too big, I ended up using this bathroom shelving unit thing from IKEA: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20154591/ I couldn't afford to buy anything new and this was basically just taking up space in my house. But now I absolutely love it as a corner bar area. The tall bottles fit on the top shelf and shorter bottles easily fit on the lower shelves. The bottom two shelves are then used to store small cans of juice (grapefruit, cranberry, etc) and a middle one stores the various bar implements - shakers, jiggers, muddlers, etc. All in all, it's a pretty nice set up! And it fits in a perfect little corner of my house.
I love the idea of storing liquor on a bookshelf! (picture #5)
I keep mine in an IKEA linen cabinet turned liquor cabinet. All it took was installing a wine glass rack to the underside of a shelf. I can't keep my liquor out in the open as my cats would probably launch themselves right into it.
We don't have room for a bar cart or any type of liquor display so we keep all booze in the top of the pantry, just like my good Baptist parents have always done. :) We don't drink much hard liquor so there's only a handful of bottles.
I have a sideboard in my dining room where I keep most of my sizeable-and-growing collection hidden. It looks nice to keep a few small bottles out (the nice gin, bitters), but not all of mine are aesthetically pleasing, so most of them are tucked away.
I tend to make drinks in the kitchen where the ice/glasses/shaker are, so sometimes I'm schlepping quite a few things back and forth, but I don't mind. Plus, it's fun to surprise guests by flinging open the sideboard doors and revealing my hoard! :)
I use an old CD/DVD tower with a couple of the shelves removed-- I have a tray that fits perfectly on the top for holding two wine glasses, two cordial glasses, shakers, jiggers, etc., and liquors and wines get stored on the three shelves. We have a very small collection (mostly made up of wine, sherry, port and brandy), so it's plenty sufficient for us.
I've been keeping mine in my bookshelves, mostly strewn across multiple shelves among the books and as bookends, but I am thinking of lining my fireplace (which I have never used and never will) with felt and keeping them in there.
We only keep bourbon on hand, so it would be quite a sad display. I do love the look, though, and if we or our friends drank more liquor, I would definitely do it!
I have a well stocked bar cart, but I always keep my vodka in the freezer :-)
OK....#4, although I love the mid-century bar cart, looses any cred whatsoever with the bottle (and a 1.75 liter bottle at that !) of cheap, spiced rum. They gain back a couple of points for decent Bourbon, but come on....that rum....oy !
I have an old school desk that was passed down from my brothers to me. I painted it red a number of years ago. It was used as a TV stand for a few years, before I turned it into a bar. I mounted a wine glass rack to it, and space for books, is excellent for rocks glasses, napkins, and bottles of wine.
