When it comes to sandwiches, sometimes less is better. You can try piling on the ingredients and condiments, but in the end, it's hard to beat the perfect combination of ripe summer tomato with avocado on whole-grain bread, or sliced radishes and salted butter on a baguette. Saveur celebrates this simplicity with a gallery of their favorite 2-ingredient sandwiches, including several surprising pairings.
Some of the sandwiches in the gallery includes some familiar favorites, but there are quite a few intriguing combinations, such as apple butter and smoked gouda on sourdough, ham and sliced hard-boiled egg on white, and peanut butter and bacon (!) on whole-wheat.
They missed a few of my own personal favorites: arugula and prosciutto on a baguette, peanut butter and banana on toasted whole wheat, and hummus and sliced cucumber on pita bread.

Smoked mozzarella w/olive oil and balsamic vinegar on ciabatta. (I'm counting the oil and vinegar as one ingredient, since I usually have a jar mixed up and ready.) Of course, if I've got a nice tomato, on it goes as ingredient #3.
Fresh homegrown tomato and good mayo on any type of bread I have on hand. Scrambled egg and american cheese on toasted whole wheat is a regular for breakfast. And ditto about the hummus and cucumber on pita. That's one of my favs.
I love a thick slice of fresh tomato with fresh basil leaves (and mayo and black pepper; do condiments really count?) on a wheat bun. :) It's my favorite summer lunch.
marinated artichoke hearts with mozzarella on a baguette - my favourite
Shredded rotisserie chicken breast and avocado slices on whole wheat bread with mayo and black pepper if condiments don't count.
left over pot roast and cheddar with a sprinkle of sea salt is one of my favorites, if there is left over broth or gravy to dip it in even better.
Peanut butter & banana on whole-wheat bread or tortilla wraps. And if I have honey at hand, then that'd be a third ingredient, drizzled over everything.
Sliced hard-boiled eggs over sliced Cheddar on whole-wheat bread, toasted on the stove until the cheese melts a bit and the bread is crispy.
Juicy tomatoes, unsalted fresh farmer's cheese, seasoned with olive oil & salt on whole-wheat bread.
Sliced smoked turkey or chicken breast on toast with Smucker's low-sugar orange marmalade. Third ingredient: unsalted fresh farmer's cheese...
Great. Now I'm hungry.
Avocado and sardines. Yum!!
Crunchy peanut butter and sriracha on whole wheat. I sometimes substitute Indian lime pickle for the sriracha. Chomp! And sweat.
Summer sausage with cucumbers (and dilled butter, if condiments don't count). Sharp cheddar cheese on apple bread or cinnamon raisin bread. Mascarpone cheese and strawberries on toast. And we can't forget - fried egg and American cheese! So bad, but so good.
Ha, Katie81, you stole mine! I recently discovered the avocado and sardine on toasted baguette, it's incredible! I like to mash up the avocado with just a few drops of olive oil and some garlic salt first.
Oh, and honey and ricotta on a hearty/seedy whole wheat!
goat cheese and plum jam on multigrain bread
hummus and aged cheddar
old cheddar and branston pickle, on multi-grain or white, grilled. mm mm good.
I feel ahead of the curve after reading this. I've been eating peanut butter and bacon sandwiches on toast since I was a child. (These days I use soy bacon, but it's still delicious.)
Bacon and avocado on sourdough toast.
(1) tomato and mayo w/ s&p on squishy bread
(2) peanut butter & salsa on grainy bread

1. Red pepper hummus & spinach on whole wheat pita.
2. Almond butter & goji berries on flax bread
3. Avocado and drizzled honey on toasted rye
4. Avocado and an over-easy egg on toasted pumpernickel
5. Peanut butter and cream cheese on nine grain toast
