What makes your small kitchen so cool:
We live on the upper level of a craftsmen era duplex in the Kingfield Neighborhood of Minneapolis. The kitchen was partially updated before we moved in, but the cabinets and hardwood floors were original to the house. I love that we've never allowed our tiny space to limit our cooking capabilities, our kitchen is truly a workhorse perfect for two people who love to cook together.
Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
When we moved in, the kitchen was in desperate need of a cosmetic update. The brick red paint was too dark for the space, and pockmarked with previous tenants holes from hanging pots and pans - I've included a before picture. We painted the kitchen Benjamin Moore "Grand Hotel Mackinac Island Blue" the first day we moved in as a fitting tribute to our home state. We try to use IKEA sparingly, but it has really been our go-to resource for inexpensive temporary solutions. We hung the shelf above the counter for more reachable storage, and the breakfast table folds down to save space. We've used the odd nook of the side of the kitchen as a "butler's pantry" of sorts, we hung a pegboard for pots and pans, and there is more space for our overflowing collection of cookbooks. You can definitely tell that being avid readers of The Kitchn has influenced our space.
What's your favorite meal to cook here?
We've done everything from hosting an elaborate plated holiday feast for twenty, to sharing casual brunches with friends. Our cooking style is simple and technique driven, using whatever ingredients inspire us at the moment. Our favorite meals together are the tasty breakfast tacos we make every weekday morning before going to work.
