What challenge have you overcome in your kitchen? We removed the large plaster hood vent that was hulking and non-functioning, placed an undercounter refrigerator where the dishwasher had been (since most of my dishes are vintage, and I didn't use it anyway), removed the layers and layers of linoleum and vinyl and painted the floor, and used a salvaged cabinet from my downstairs neighbor who remodeled his place to replace the old, oak refrigerator cabinet that stuck out too far, and thus it limited my usable counter space.

What's the story of your kitchen?
The last picture shows how my kitchen looked right after I moved in. It felt extremely claustrophobic. Last year I did a 'light remodel'. I wanted to keep with the feel of the vintage building, so I didn't change much.
What is your favorite meal to cook here?
I love to make avocado toast. This dish is comprised of local baker Dave's killer bread, spelt bread, toasted, with sliced avocado, lemon juice, olive oil, coarse sea salt, and crushed red pepper on top. So simple, yet all of the flavors blend wonderfully together. I ate something similar at a cafe on my last visit to NYC.

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

Which undercounter refrigerator did you put in? I love your kitchen!
Beautiful! Love the glass cabinet doors.
I love the small under the counter fridge! What a great idea and it opens up so much more space for that cute cutting board table next to the stove. I also love the white theme. :)
Oh, wow... it looks so good now! My last apartment had a giant refrigerator in it too, I couldn't even open it all the way because the door would bang into the opposite cabinet.
I've looked at apartments in Portland on craigslist before, and I've seen quite a few with this exact same kitchen style... do you live in a large complex ??
thanks, everybody.
the fridge is some no name brand...i can look it up when i get home, if you would like, but i don't think it's still available. it actually doesn't keep things quite as fresh as i'd like, but it's a good compromise to have so much more space....for sure.
the walls and floor are the lightest shade of pink that you've ever seen...so light that i even think they're white during the day. usually at night you can tell that they're pink.
I love the cabinets and floor- it must have been a lot of hard work. But you took out the full size fridge! After living with a mini fridge recently for about 4 months, I'm so totally anti.
there are many apartments in this style in portland. my building has 30 units in it.
@chiyo25- you're anti small fridge?
What a lovely makeover!
Julie, I want your kitchen. I love all the white & the glass cabinets. Personally, I don't think I'd do the white floor, but it looks great. I really love the sink & faucet.
I loved this in small cool apartments. Glad you applied to this too! I am soooo into your small head planters...
Wow, I love this!
Very sweet, love the faucet! And the addition of the skinny shelves for your cook books, and the little porcelain planters with faces on them.
There are so many condos and apartments in PDX with this same kitchen setup. To tell the truth, I've turned down buying/renting places like this because of the small kitchen. Yours looks really cute, though! It just doesn't have the space I need... garg.
wow like night and day - the remodel is so bright and beautifully done. Simple and polished, love it a lot. Where is that chopping block from? Its a nice small size and very cute.

thanks, everybody.
@saeras- i got the stand thingy at an estate sale and then my bf's dad cut the chopping block for me. i used a salvaged bin pull and painted the whole thing white.
I LOVE this!!! Your "light" remodel sure made a heavy impact. What a difference!
We NEED a house tour.
Nice job. It looks larger than 60 SF. I have 87 SF and it is smaller than this. is 60 SF wall to wall or just the floor space?
There's nothing wrong with having a small fridge! It encourages you to keep only the freshest foods, which in turn encourages you to take better care of your body by feeding it fresh food. :) The minifridge isn't just for college students--in Japan, most families have one instead of a typical huge American fridge, because it saves space and because they don't WANT to eat any food that's not quite fresh.
@dmstudio- i measured. sometimes i'm not good at math, so i had my coworker, who was an econ major, check it for me. great that it looks larger. i chose items that were rather small scale, so it's a good optical illusion, i guess.
@creative license- i entered the apartmenttherapy contest, too....i think it's called 'julie's cozy and vibrant' or some such thing.
