We consume a lot of pistachios, olives, edamame and other foods that produce inedible waste that we don't always know what to do with aside from standing over a trash can while eating them. One of our favorite brands, Joseph Joseph came up with a pretty easy solution to this problem.
When entertaining, our small kitchen can get pretty crowded with serving dishes and often we run out of space, even for the smallest dishes. We love serving finger foods at parties and often there's just not enough space to accomodate a scraps bowl. That's the exact reason why we love this Double Dish and of course it would be easy to hack using bowls we all already have!
The separate dishes are made from high-quality melamine which makes them easy to clean and resistant to stains. The waste disposal chutes are evenly spaced around the bowl to allow for easy disposal of inedible waste such as wrappers or shells. We really like that these are separate bowls because it makes the set much more versatile.
And the best part, of course, is that you don't have to look at all those nasty olive pits and half-gnawed shells after people throw them away! They're all neatly out of sight.

Seems like something you can make yourself with some dollar store bowls or even an old vinyl disk and a bowl.... ok, i'm going to work on that this weekend.
Had a friend show me how to create fun bowls with old vinyls in your oven (Instructables Here). A little super glue to put put mounts for a small bowl in the middle and you have the same, but larger and for a wider range of nuts.
Not only fun for the whole family, but relatively cheap if you go to your local Goodwill for the vinyls or have some laying around the house (he'll never miss that one... ).
olives! is there anything grosser than looking at gnawed up olive pits.
pistachio's?
I didn't want to like Joseph Joseph products after I saw how Sur La Table was overhyping them all over the stores, but I got the scoop colander here:
http://www.josephjoseph.com/colanders-and-strainers/scoop-colander
and wowza. I use it for everything. Its heatproof and since its got a good size, it scoops out pasta, I can use it for deep frying, it serves casseroles, it does everything. New favorite kitchen tool.
My aunt gave all of us family members a nice pistachio gift for Christmas this year. She gave us a sack of nuts and this bowl from Pottery Barn: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/vintage-wood-snack-bowls/?pkey=e|wooden%2Bbowl|2|best|0|1|24||1&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_-
We put the nuts in one side and the other side is there for the waste. She said she was inspired by my uncle (her husband), because he kept smuggling two bowls around for his pistachio snacks.
I actually like this wooden bowl a little better than the Joseph Joseph bowl, only because it fits my decor (I have a lot of natural products in my home, and a neutral, soft color palette) and when I have parties, I don't have to explain how the bowl works--I just put a few empty pistachio shells in the "waste" side, and everyone gets the idea. I've had TONS of compliments on it, and it's even pretty just sitting on a table, shelf, counter, etc. with nothing in it or fruit or other snacks.
The concept design for this was on the American Inventor show a couple years back. Hope the poor guy had a patent.
This is a great idea! My boss always eats pistachios, and I'm constantely finding the shells everywhere. He would never use a bowl like this though.
Cute! But I always just put a bowl inside a larger bowl. The shells just go between the edges.
I would prefer if it was made from any other material, wood, ceramic, porcelain. Otherwise, great concept. Can just hold one bowl on my lap while I watch tv, instead of trying to balance two, or aim for the trashcan while watching movies in the dark.
