What challenge have you overcome in your kitchen? Our layout options were strictly limited by the chimney, window and staircase. With much creative thinking we managed to generate a lot of extra storage and counter space by tucking cabinets into the space beneath the staircase, in front of the chimney and creating an island. We also managed to squeeze in a couple of shelves also under the staircase, which was formerly completely wasted dead space. Replacing the little window with something 4 times bigger made a huge difference in light. The cabinets were also salvaged from a kitchen demo in D.C. — all we had to do was uninstall them, paint and repurpose them!

What's the story of your kitchen?
When we bought this c. 1905 former frat house four years ago, the kitchen was the result of years of neglect-cabinets were falling apart, the plumbing leaked, there was minimal counter space and was it dark! We had to use a flashlight to see what was on the stove because it was tucked into a dark corner. We knew we needed to make some changes when we woke up one winter morning and there was ice on the counter!

What is your favorite meal to cook here?
Anything with yeast--especially bagels and cinnamon rolls.
