When you're contemplating an afternoon snack that really hits the spot, is jicama ever on your list? Sure we eat it on salads, but what about covered in seasonings and skewered like last night's kabobs? It's traditional street food in Mexico, and there's no reason you can't partake!
Jicaletas are a tasty treat, and yet they are something that hasn't really gained much popularity in the US. It's a traditional Latin America street food that is most common in Mexico, but can easily be made at home.
Usually, jicama is cut into thick slices (half inch or more) and then skewered. It's sprinkled with lime juice and rolled in flavorings. It can be something simple like chili or something extra tart (usually from the addition of citric acid) like orange, grape, strawberry — all of which have a little heat to them as well.
In your own kitchen, you can try cutting jicama into spears, sticks (if the full lollipop size is intimidating) or skewer them up (because what food isn't better in stick form?), squeeze lime on top and give them a sprinkle of chili con limon (found in most grocery stores). You can also dip them in cajeta (goat's milk caramel), dulce de leche (cow's milk caramel), or pureed fruit.... even Kool-Aid powder for a more carnival-ish type feel.
Have you ever had a jicaletas before? Is there a vendor near you that sells them? Let us know where in the comments below!

can anyone describe what plain jicama tastes/feels like? I've never had it. Is it good for you?
Jicama is like an large, un-sweet, occasionally slightly woody version of a Chinese apple.
I don't know if it's good for you, but it can't be bad.
jicama is great--it's slightly sweet with a texture like a raw potato. it has a starchy taste, but it's very refreshing. i've only ever had it raw, usually in salads, and usually paired with a lime dressing. i'm not sure how it is nutritionally, but i imagine it's not terrible--maybe similar to an apple? you should try it!
P.S. you can put some of this on it:

@caliH: Jicama has a texture a bit like a Chinese apple-pear; it's juicy, firm and a bit grainy. It doesn't have a strong flavour, so is a natural canvas for other flavours. I love it in salads; nice crunch.
I think jicaletas sound terrific! Must try that next summer.
Jicaletas are deliciously fresh and so much fun with the different flavors and colors you can choose from.
Nutritionally speaking, jicama has fiber, potasium and vitamin c. It's low on sodium.
Chile, limón y sal on everything please!
Jicama, taste... Think radish, dakion, water chestnut,... Are they good for you? No they are terrible! They will make warts grow on your... Well, it's just too awful to say... Take my advice and stick to organic tofu.
