Snow arrived full blast here today, and I'm eyeing a bag of sweet potatoes and another of beets, thinking of the warmest, coziest thing to do with these bright vegetables. I crave warmth and color and soft, gooey things to eat this time of year. What about you? What are you craving? What do you wish with all your heart you were eating tonight in this chilly weather?

Soups are always top of mind, of course, and risotto is also high on my to-cook list this time of year. (Maybe a sweet potato and beet risotto tonight — yum!)
What else is inspiring you? What do you crave in January?

I've made more soup this month than I made all of last year! Tried the cabbage and rice hot and sour soup from The Kitchn and loved it. Trying to stay with brothy soups instead of the super creamy soups.
Indian food, for sure. I immediately crave korma and curries when there's even the slightest chill in the air, and chicken tikka masala is fantastic cure for both snowy days and headcolds. The rich, thick sauces and aromatic spices are complex yet simple, and warm me from the inside out. I order mine extra spicy this time of year.
French Onion Soup.
mole!
I made that risotto last night! i've made it a few times and I absolutely love it. thanks for the tip about topping it with tofutti--easy delicious vegan meal!
I'm still loving smoothies, even in the chilly Maine winters! Gotta have one green smoothie a day. Soup for other meals :)
I would make soup every night (year-round) if my wife didn't object. That said, it's easier to talk her into soup twice a week during the cooler months, so I'll what I can get. ^_^
The weather's about to get really cold here, and I'm craving Just Bento's Hearty Meatball Soup, and Just Hungry's Boston Baked Beans with fresh bread. Maybe some of Mrs. Ergul's Chineese Stir-Fried beef with fried rice and definitely some of the Eclectic Cook's Just Chili served over a freshly toasted hotdog.
It's soup for me - made an onion soup this week that seemed to only get better when the left-overs sat a day in the fridge. Going to try your mushroom wild-rice soup tonight. I live in the Arctic, so in the absence of large daily doses of sunlight, I crave lots and lots of veggies - in soups, stews, casseroles and pasta dishes. We especially enjoy roasted veggies over rice or pasta.
Potstickers! For some reason, weekends especially, in this weather I just want to make an oversized batch of potstickers, put them all on a big tray and eat them in front the tv with chopsticks with my hubby.
I'm currently trying to abide by the Whole Living 2012 cleanse, which means I've been avoiding meat, dairy, and bread/grains since 1/2- while I feel happy about the results so far- I am craving nothing more than a big bowl of cheesy pasta, maybe mixed in with some mushrooms...
Puerco Pibil by Robert Rodriguez on YouTube. I've been craving it for weeks. I think it's time to give in.
Italian beef stew with rosemary, peas, and carrots.
Luckily I've been craving really fresh things this week. Lots of salads, including a raw kale salad last night, grapefruits and other citrus, and avocado (on everything!). Also light but hearty things like cauliflower "steaks". Much easier to keep my diet on track when I actually want to eat the light stuff :)
cauliflower and smoked gouda soup
Just a short while ago I was wishing I had thought about making Baked Risotto with Pancetta and Caramelized Onions tonight. I would have picked up a few onions on the way home from work. I only have 1 or 2 and the caramelized onions make the dish. It will get made before the end of the weekend however :)
Japanese Ramen.
Just went shopping today for this weekends' meals: Beef and broccoli lo mein, lasagne and white chicken chili. It will be a cozy weekend!
Meat. Spicy meat dishes. last year around March I started to crave big bowls of fruit salad. I wondering if that will hit me again in the spring...
Fried food. Crispy and hot and warm and full of fat.
Since we finally have some coldy-cold (and a dusting of snow) up here in Minnesoter, I was thinking this would be a good weekend to do another cassoulet. The awesome thing is I scored some duck breasts Cub somehow had so I can actually make it a little more authentic.
The week after Christmas I couldn't get to a Vietnamese restaurant fast enough for a big bowl of really spicy beef pho (this place calls it Hue City Soup). I love the holidays and all the excess but there comes a point where....
It is much warmer and drier than usual in Northern California this year so while I wish I was burrowing in with a bowls of stew, braised short ribs and the like, instead, we've been eating lots of big salads such as arugula and hangar steak and raw kale with various proteins on top. Not bad mind you, but I'd much rather be eating something a bit more in tune with the month of January.
I'm craving starchy root veggies, and anything baked (I love turning my oven on and hanging out in my toasty kitchen!). Last week I ate roasted root veggies over barley, rice, or pasta all week. This week it's shepherd's pie, bratwurst w/ cabbage and sauerkraut, and colcannon (I may also unfreeze some turkey ragu to eat with pasta). The past two weeks have also seen a lot of homemade sourdough with butter and honey, and cup after cup of hot tea.
I love soups, and I frequently make veggie-based soups (usually with white beans-yum) for lunch, but my hubster thinks soup is too light for a full meal, so I stick with thick, hearty dishes like shepherd's pie and roasted meats and root vegetables.
