National Doughnut Day falls every year on the first Friday in June, and unlike other "national days" devoted to random things, this one actually has some historical significance: in 1938 the Salvation Army created National Doughnut Day to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. In fact, the Salvation Army introduced the doughnut to Americans - and, as a result, instigated the never-ending battle between sweet surrender and self-control. (Sigh.) But today we give in unabashedly to the delicious deep-fried doughnut with 10 recipes you can make at home!
