The Los Angeles home of Lisa and Piero, as rightfully described in this 2012 Apartment Therapy house tour, feels "like an escape to Europe"— a description not unbecoming to the owners, who cite the Charleston House in Sussex, England as their inspiration. The kitchen and accompanying dining room are particular favorites of mine: the look is dramatic, yet it also feels very cozy and open. How do they do that?
It's all about the use of dark and light: cream cabinets and white subway tile play off black countertops and a black range; dark patterned wallpaper and black window frames in the dining room become especially striking against white crown molding; a farmhouse sink feels cottagey-cozy, while a pink/red oriental rug adds a touch of luxury; and finally, large windows along one whole wall ensure there's plenty of light so the rooms don't become too dreary.
