Do you know your Lagavulin from your Laphroaig? It's time to take your cocktail party knowledge about your favorite Scottish whiskies to the next level.

Mental Floss found out how 15 distilleries got their names — everything from Highland Park to Bruichladdich.

Not surprisingly, many of the names are derived from Gaelic words relating to the location of the distilleries or the distilling process. Our favorite story might be of Glenmorangie, which actually went to court over its name after a Scottish citizen claimed the name was a mistranslation and misrepresented the Gaelic language.

Now if only Mental Floss offered a pronunciation guide as well.
