I have been unpacking in my new kitchen over the past month, and as I hung up my aprons I considered what a stack of them I have, and how infrequently I actually wear them. I find that I often feel constricted with an apron around my neck, and opt to wear casual, easily washed t-shirts and jeans in the kitchen instead of fussing with an apron. What about you? Do you always wear an apron? If so, why? Or do you eschew the apron for daily cooking but throw on a frilly one when you have company?

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

i actually just got one for christmas and its super cute and sassy :)
I'm in between the first and the second answer. I wear an apron quite often, but not EVERY time I cook. It's a Wonder Woman apron, and totally awesome, I must say. :o]
I've received a couple of aprons (usually outdoor grill related) as gifts over the years. I'm reluctant to throw them out as they were gifts. I do the lion's share of the cooking for my family but, the only time they get worn are when the kids are helping my wife bake something.
If I'm cooking a nice meal for guests, I wear clothes I don't mind getting dirty. But, I usually have to do some last minute prep. So, before my guests arrive, I change into my "company clothes" and put on my apron as I continue cooking. I try not to have it on when people actually arrive, though.
I tend to wear it when I'm baking. I like to make a mess when I use flour. :)
Ditto egreenwa--I tend to get flour all over me, hence the plain apron. I'm sorry--a frilly apron? Just embarrassing. Would not be caught dead.
I own an apron and I really should wear it, but I never do. Perhaps if I placed it in easy reach I would put it on.
I wear it every time I cook and while doing dishes. I hate ANY splatter on my clothes.
I have three that are adorable, but don't wear them nearly often enough. I really should, but I don't have a good place to store them to get to them easily! But I really love them!
I wear one when I'm cooking something that easily splatters and stains like drying in oil or cooking tomato sauce. I also have a new baby who doesn't like to be put down so I often wear him in a sling or wrap while I cook with the apron over us both since the carriers don't get washed as often as regular clothes.
I wear one most of the time - 90%. They are something I look for when travelling. I have a great drawer of food memories from many of the places I have visited!
I wear one all the time - I am prone to spills. I also am in the habit of throwing it on over my clothes in the morning for breakfast to keep my work clothes clean.
I wear one more than occasionally, but not every time I cook. I have a few that rotate around. It really does keep the mess on my clothes to a minimum.
My mom never wore an apron, and I started adulthood not wearing one either. One day, my mom randomly bought one for me (at the Panda exhibit at the National Zoo, of all places) and I started wearing it. Now I wear it EVERY time I cook or even wash the dishes. I've gotten to the point where I feel weird cooking without it, and I've become so used to dusting floury fingers on the front of my apron that if I don't wear it, I usually end up with accidental flour prints all over my jeans.
Don't wear an apron but I do wear a chef's jacket. My husband bought one as a joke many years ago and I started wearing it because it has saved so many clothes from spots and my arms from burns.
My laziness about changing from work clothes before cooking makes me wear aprons. Mine says "Kiss the Cook" so I'm often rewarded for my efforts. :)
I have an etsy-purchase apron that's cute and fun. I don't wear it often though, usually only when I'm making something messy, wearing something nice, or know it's going to be a long day in the kitchen.
I only have one that my mother gave me, but I do use it whenever doing something splattery or floury. Especially oil splatters, since those are a pain to get out of daily-wear clothes.
I have a splashy faucet. I need to wear apron every time I come near the sink. It's hard to find nice water proof apron. Industrial type is just too heavy duty for me.
aside from the obvious reasons to wear an apron while cooking (and I do, nearly every time), i also like it because I can keep my phone it my apron's pocket, especially pre-dinner party. If my guests call me with a last minute question (directions, can they bring something, etc.), i don't have to go running through my apartment to find my phone mid-meal prep.
Pretty much always.
I did a grungy apron purge a few weeks ago. I kept a very nice oilcloth apron that I use every day, and one spare for any guest cooks. The rest of them, very stained and worn, all went out in the trash.
I have about 30 aprons (from work, gifts) and few ever get worn — mostly by others if they are cooking in my home. I too feel constrained and fussy with it around my neck. I do however have a few well worn t-shirts that only get worn when I'm planning something particularly messy in the kitchen.
I wear one at work, but at home, I don't, though I have a really cute one my mom gave me. I suppose that means I'll have to start entertaining and wearing it.
I have several aprons [all of them gifts], but I never wear any of them. However, the very first thing I do when I get home is change into my PJs, so I'm not really concerned about spills or splashes.
I started wearing an apron daily when I got tired of grease/food stains on all my clothes. I suppose you could say I'm a messy cook :)
I have two of the same apron I wear always, one clean, one in the wash. It is a "comfort apron" -- the straps criss cross over the shoulders --so it does not hang on my neck, which I hate! Love it and it is the only apron for me. Denim material holds up great.
Got from chefs.com if anyone interested.
I love being able to wipe my hands on me and not make a mess. I ruined far too many clothes with splatters that did not come out.
First thing I reach for in the kitchen.
My mom made me one that's a copy of my great-grandmother's apron, and I wear it all the time. Wide shoulders, full-coverage front so my clothes really do stay clean, and it doesn't hang from my neck (I agree with everyone else on that).
I've never understood the frilly-apron thing, actually. If it's going to get dirty, why would I wear it in front of company? If it's not going to get dirty, why would I wear it?
Still, I look at all the cute "impractical" aprons and feel a tiny twinge of jealousy every once in a while.
if i'm cooking, i just throw on something junky.
I think the last time I did was Thanksgiving but that's because I was wearing a dress shirt and tie (like you're supposed to on Holidays)
Christmas I didn't cook. :D
i have two, one waist and one full apron, and they are both super light weight---wear them all the time, alternating when one is dirty. its just a good place to wipe my hands and such when prepping food, and even good to wear when i'm doing a deep clean of the apartment...at this point, i guess its just a habit?
I didn't wear an apron until my mom made me one that is just too cute not to wear!
Yeah, for me it is almost always just when I am going to be using flour or powdered sugar for something. I am incapable of working with flour etc. without just coating myself in it.
I tend to put one on when I know I'll be drying my hands a lot.
I have a really cute one that I love to wear! And it does save my clothes. I hate getting stains even on junky or old clothes.
For the neck issue, get a lightweight apron and tie it just a little tighter around your waist, and then tie it really loose around the neck while you bend your head back. I have the same issue and that does the trick.
I wear one about 90% of the time. I have a good collection. My Mom _always_ wore one. When she died I inherited a couple of her aprons. I wear them when I'm cooking one of her recipes or if I want to feel connected to her. I don't get the aprons that only come up half way. The splatters and splashes I get are usually on the top of my body!
