How Do You Clean Hard-to-Clean Vegetables?

Q: What is the best way to clean vegetables like bok choy or fennel, without chopping them up? I usually cut them in half, and then barbecue them, but it's tough clean the dirt unless you pull them apart.

Any suggestions?

Editor: Great question! I usually slice them through the root — so the layers are exposed but still held together at the root — then run them under running water.
