Q: Do you have any recipe suggestions for a really healthy granola bar? I like making my own and sometimes I feel like there's too much butter or sugar. Should I throw in chia seeds or some other kind of super healthy ingredient?

Editor: Personally, I like to load up granola bars as much as I can with dried fruits. I've also had success using ground-up dates to hold the bars together in place of some or all of the sugar. Check out these recipes and their comment threads for more ideas:

I add pumpkin, sunflower, and flax seeds to my granola. You want to make sure your granola is healthy -- but some natural products have more calories and fat than others. Some nuts, for example, are healthier than others -- walnuts and almonds are better than pistachios and macadamia nuts. Don't forget the science of combination -- you need to put in some Vitamin C to help your body better absorb other nutrients.
If you really want to watch what you're putting in, try a website like calorie count which'll give you nutritional info for a recipe. And don't eat 6 at a time, of course.
I've never made granola bars (though I've been meaning to try), but I make homemade granola all the time. I use Melissa Clark's double coconut granola recipe and then make substitutions from there. Not sure how you feel about coconut oil, but it's not butter and it is DELICIOUS in granola.
To me, serving size is everything. I make these granola bars in a 9x13 inch pan, but cut them into about 40 bite-sized pieces. They are so dense that one fills me up just enough as an afternoon snack. You can modify it with different nuts or grains, and next time I'm going to use dark chocolate and try some dried cherries too.
they aren't granola, but i made super easy (w no extra sugar added) pb & j cereal bars this morning - no bake too!
