As the weather heats up I confess that ice cream hasn't been the first thing on my mind. No, snow cones and shaved ice have sounded even more appealing to me this season.

This shaved ice machine from Williams-Sonoma means that those old-school frozen treats are just a moment away. There's something about shaved ice that's so refreshing without being cloying, especially since you can add as little or as much syrup as you like, and play around with flavors to add spicy or unusual notes.

And of course, a machine like this also means you can make straight-up Korean or Hawaiian-style shaved ice. Here's a great recipe to get you started:

How do you feel about shaved ice and snow cones? Do they win out over ice cream, or is that a losing fight?
