Q: We're throwing a cocktail party to introduce my boyfriend to my parents, friends, and extended family in two weeks. I'd like to make a cocktail that speaks to my experience working on a cruise ship for the past seven months. I am hoping your readers may have some great ideas for a tropical whiskey drink!
Whenever the man-friend would visit, we would giggle at one of the tug boats in Nassau, the Amber Jack. A question has plagued us: if the Amber Jack was a cocktail, what might she contain?

a meet-the-family cocktail should likely entail absinthe. or novocaine.
I found an Amber Jack recipe on iDrink.com. <http://www.idrink.com/v.html?id=50029>
It is basically a Sour made with bourbon and amaretto. I would up the wow-factor by making my own fresh sour mix. Instead of the unnatural red maraschino cherry, I would skewer tropical fruit slices with cocktail parasols.
There is a recipe on here for Meyer Lemon Whiskey Sours. They are fantastic!

Southern Devil (long version)
1 measure Jack Daniels
1 measure Southern Comfort
Add for the long verison omit for the short.
half and half Lemon Lime and Bitters and Dry Ginger ale
Half fill glass, jug or what ever with ice, slice (or more in jug) of lemon and pour in the liquors and then the fizz.
But an Amber Jack?
Jack Daniels whiskey and Mead Liqueur in a rocks glass containg two ice cubes and a twist of lemon, serve with a half straw.
Lisarosman, you have me laughing! The novocaine is a brilliant idea!!!!
John, what did you have on the cruise? That would be a good place to start. I guess it depends on where the cruises went and whether the bartender was creative/merciful.
We stayed at the Moana Surfrider in Waikiki a few years ago and the Beach Bar had this delicious drink that I think was whiskey and fresh pineapple juice and tropical garnishes and it was delicious, though it does not appear to be on their menu anymore.
