Q: I am in charge of putting together a bridal shower. We're planning on doing a brunch and having beer, wine and a signature cocktail.
The bridal colors are black, white, and purple, so I'm wondering if your lovely readers could suggest a purple cocktail for a crowd.

Editor: Katherine, we think that you really can't go wrong with a cool, elegant Blue Moon cocktail (gin, lemon juice, and creme de violette). Yes, the color is a dusky lavender — not exactly deep purple — but the taste is delicate without being too sweet. It's a classic drink, and that's probably the way we would lean.
• Straight Up: Creme de Violette and Blue Moon Cocktails
Readers, any ideas for Katherine? Something more solidly purple, perhaps?

This new year I drank blueberry cassis (pure blended blueberries would work just as well) topped up with cava. Gorgeous!
The Purple Haze Martini is a nice shade of purple :)
Here is a recipe I found online
Purple Haze Martini-
1 oz. freshly squeezed pomegranate juice*
1 1/2 oz. Hpnotiq®
1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice
orange rind and apple slice for garnish
one of my wedding colors was purple. for the shower we had sangria with lots of dark berries...not exactly purple, but it worked.
How about a champagne cocktail with Chambord and Prosecco? Add a garnish of frozen grapes on a mini bamboo skewer.
A great purple cocktail I have had is a concord grape mimosa...champagne or prosecco with some really good, deep purple concord grape juice. Awesome. They have them at ABC Kitchen in NY. You can probably find a link to them somewhere on the web.
You can get a nice purple by using cranberry or pomegranate juice and blue curacao with any other clear or golden liquor. My favorite made-up purple cocktail is vodka, cranberry, blue curacao and sprite, garnished with starfruit.
If you like Cosmos just replace the triple sec with Blue Curacoa. Its makes a beautiful deep purple drink.
Three Olives Vodka makes one called purple :) It's slightly grape flavored but it's delicious and while my creative juices aren't flowing right now it'd be a great base for a purple drink.
My favorite bar makes a lavender cosmo that's a nice shade of purple. No idea what's in it, but it's very tasty.
The Stratosphere -- about 3/4 ounce of Creme Yvette (or Creme de Violette) plus Champagne to fill the glass, possibly served with a lemon twist -- would work well, is a pretty violet, and is very festive.
The Perpetual is an old-school purple cocktail. If memory serves, it's a half-and-half mix of Italian vermouth and French vermouth with a skosh each of Creme Yvette and Creme de Cacao. Now that I look it up, it appears that the manufacturer of Creme Yvette has a recipe on its website. (http://www.cremeyvette.com/cocktails_4.php)
The nice thing about both the champagne-based and the vermouth-based cocktails is that they won't knock people on their ears nearly as quickly as something that is all liquor. It's not much easier on the booze budget in actual fact, but people seem to appreciate being able to enjoy more cocktails without having to worry that they'll end up a lot drunker than they want to be. Not a bad idea for a wedding reception if you ask me.
I just have to add that the idea of a purple "martini" makes me throw up in my mouth a little. *shudder*

purple drank... it sounds easy enough to make. maybe the bachellor party not bridal shower for hallucinogens though.
I haven't had one in awhile, but a Grape Crush is both delicious(!) and purple.
1/2 oz Bols Blue
1/2 oz Raspberry Sourpuss
Sprite and Ice
Did I mention it's delicious...?
How about a Arnaud Martini?
1.5 oz Gin
1.5 oz dry vermouth
1.5 oz Crème de Cassis or Chambord
Stir with ice and strain into glass, garnish is usually a blackberry.
I really enjoy this drink and it would be easy to make this in large quantities and then serve by the glass.
PURPLE JESUS FTW!
An aviation cocktail would also be nice. It is gin, lemon juice, creme de violette, and a barspoon of maraschino liquer. Garnished with a maraschino cherry (luxardo are the best) and lemon peel.
A kir royale (or standard kir) would work wonderfully - Creme de cassis (I love love LOVE the Cassis Liqueur that's made by Clear Creek Distillery - it's amazing!) with champagne or dry sparkling wine for the kir royale, and creme de cassis with white wine for a standard kir. You could even branch out and use Blackberry liqueur or Loganberry liqueur if you can find them in your area. The kir royale is one of my favorite spring/summer drinks, and the gentle gradient from champagne to deep purple is just lovely.
There's a bar around me that makes really good "Grape Apes" and I don't know the recipe but they're served in a short glass with ice and you "shoot" it all at once.. Like an extra large shot. You'll get a cold headache, most likely, but it's fun and tasty.
I second the aviation (or the blue moon as they're nearly identical). It's classy, fresh, light- perfect for a bridal shower. You could float some violets in the cocktail, or 'glue' one (sugared or natural) to the rim of each glass with a little syrup.
Not sure what flavor profile you're looking for, but a good way to add your choice of color and flavor into a cocktail is tea-infused vodka. Just add a tea bag into a bottle and place in the freezer for a few days.
You can also think about different syrups.
welches grape juice is the best way to make purple..purple passion is what we called it back in college..eek!
I just read a recipe with a touch of beet juice in it...that could be interesting!?
(google purple passion..you'll get lots of good ideas)
I third the Aviation. Just a great cocktail.
For our wedding, we made a concord grape martini with organic juice, gin, and orange bitters. It was stunning and delicious. You can find that and other of my recipes at churchchomp.com .
