Q: I hate spice racks! They take up so much space and they tend to look messy. But my solution of having a bunch of spices shoved in a shoebox (I write the names on the tops) isn't working either!
Help! What do people use for spices that won't take up all of my counter space and will look neat?

Editor: Mary Beth, we agree — spice storage can be a pain! We have seen some good ideas here on the blog, though — from a spice rack mounted on the back of a cabinet door, to a neat, orderly white minimalist rack on the wall. Here are a few past ideas from our very creative and ingenious readers!

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

I use small lazy susans (turntables) on 3 shelves in a cupboard in my kitchen. I've organized them by 3 groups so it's not hard to find specific spices. :)
My problem is that I've always had trouble finding spice racks that accommodate more than 12 spices (I have around 30). Found this which is pretty handy; saves space but holds a lot, and eliminates problem of having to pull things out to get to things in the back of cabinets:

I made the spice rack shown out of sheet metal and the little magnetic spice containers from the container store, but mounted it to the back of my cabinet door. I LOVE it. I labeled all the spices jars with frosted/clear address labels.
I was so sick of not being able to find spices but I have way more spices (a bit over 30) than most racks can handle.
This way if I need more spices I just line another cabinet door with the metal and go to town. Also great is that since I made my own labels it will accommodate some of my weird (i.e. Grains of Paradise) spices that no ready made labels, jars, or spice racks will have.
All our spices are in a drawer. They are laying down sideways instead of standing upright, since you cannot see the labels if they stand upright. I'm guessing we have 20-25 jars in the drawer, which is 11" wide. Thought about getting one of these "drawer spice organizers" but haven't gotten around to it yet.

We looked at the Spice Stack that ariellie linked, but I wondered if I would get frustrated pulling out 2 drawers before finding the oregano in drawer #3.
I bought tins online and little double-sided magnets and put them on my fridge - doesn't take up any more space and gorgeous and inexpensive. I also buy spices in bulk so they wouldn't cost as much! http://www.zomppa.com/2010/02/07/spice-it-up/
I, too, use the magnetic spice containers but I just stuck them to the side of my fridge, in lieu of putting anything up on the wall or cabinet (we rent). If someone gets particularly vigorous with their fridge-closing, sometimes one or two falls off, but generally it works well and I can rearrange them as my cooking whims change.
I use stackable bead storage containers from the craft store. They're roughly organized by type (Italian spices, Indian spices, various peppers, etc.), and since they come in different sizes, I can put lesser used spices in smaller containers to take up less room. I have over 60 different spices, and when all stacked together, they take up a good deal less than a square foot of shelf space in the pantry. The containers are clear, so you can see the spices (and it's pretty!), and I used waterproof bandage tape for handwritten labels.
I have a bunch of the magnetic tins, also on the side of my refrigerator. The best deal I've found as far as variety of sizes and being able to get exactly what you need is:

You can get magnetic sheets that will stick to walls or the insides of cabinets, round magnets to stick to the backs of the tins, custom printed spice labels, round or square tins... I think the prices are reasonable too.
Thanks to Penzeys Spices and my mom's dried herbs from the garden we have a lot of spices around. We use a drawer, it's split with dividers. Baking spices are kept in the pull out drawer of the cabinet beneath the spice drawer. We also have a wall rack from Ikea with 2 hanging shelves that we put spices used most often (all types of pepper, black, cayenne, white, etc., seasoned salts, basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme) on so they are within easy reach.
In the drawer the spices lay sideways for easy reading, and are alphabetized so if one is label side down you have a general idea of where it should be.
I also buy in bulk and freeze while keeping smaller amounts in the drawer. Just remember to keep your spice racks away from heat and light.

(though now I'm smitten with the idea of keeping them on the fridge- very cool!)
Here is a picture of the one I made similar to the one shown above but mounted to the back of my cabinet door.
I also put links to all the products I used, so you can make your own. SUPER easy!

I have a rather large spice collection (about 100 at least count) I went to spice house and bought 100 of their glass bottles (penzeys sells similar ones). I have them lined up in two drawers alphabetically similar to http://www.themaidenmetallurgist.com/2009/04/29/spice%20drawer%20after-thumb-400x512.jpg but much more organized. I find that this alleviates most of the problems I had with organization before namely digging through spices to find one particular one, and not thinking I had something and buying another bottle.
This is ours, handmade: http://supersecretinternet.com/spice.jpg
Sometimes I wish we had made a third row, but the rest aren't used as often and just sit in the pantry anyway.
It's nice and flat against the wall, which is great for our tiny kitchen.
I'm not even gonna lie-- I buy my spices in small baggies from Central Market's bulk section, and keep them in a shoebox under my counter. As I use them, I move them to the front, so that I can look in every month or so to see what I haven't used in a while. If I've been on an oregano binge, for instance, but I have a baggie of asafoetida moldering away in the back, it's time for some Moroccan.
If anything stays in the back for more than a month or two, it's time to throw the stuff away.
Counterintuitively, this keeps my spices fresh, organized, and under control. Someday I'll find a system that works as well without being quite so ugly...
Like jonkeane, I keep my spices upright in a drawer next to the range. i bought my jars and round labels for the tops from JK Adams. The labels are preprinted but there are plenty of blank extras so you can label anything out of the ordinary like Szechuan Peppercorns etc.
I really like these! they are hexagonal magnets and they can go right on the fridge or a magnet board like the above one.

So many cute spice racks! I'm quite fond of mine as well, here are two photos:

The wall rack was there when we moved in, but it is just a simple wooden rack that could be easily replicated. The jars are these cuties from Target, with clear address labels on the lids.
I glued strong magnets to small (and larger) squat canning jars and have them sticking on the doors of our pantry (a locker) and other metal surfaces in the kitchen. Love that I can buy spices in bulk and that I can see clearly how much I have of what. (labels are on the lid, although I can generally tell which is which.

I'll second the comment about lazy susans in the cupboard. My parents used them growing up; it's all I'd ever use.
I also have a lazy susan in a higher, very deep cupboard, which lets me browse my other baking oils and powders, without dragging a chair over every time to look deep inside.
I had loads of velcro left over from a craft project. So I put strips on the back of my doors and strips on the jars the spices came in. Cheap and easy. It doesn't look fancy but we move alot and I found this method good as you can just peel the velcro off when you move. Plus its inside the doors so no one really sees it.
I love my double deck, lazy susans in the cupboard. It's easy to find the spice I need and the jars are easy to refill with more spice from the bulk section of the store.
I just got a digsmed revolving spice rack from ebay. They pop up from time to time. A nice aesthetic and practical way to store your spices. See here - http://cravenmaven.wordpress.com/2010/01/07/found-it-digsmed-circular-spice-rack/

Thank you so much to everyone for posting links! My spices are super poorly organized and I have a very small kitchen, and I'm seriously considering some of these options.
@drewparadise - Love the Etsy options...If I decide I don't want to put the effort into customizing my own, I am definitely going to order one of those. Thanks!
I think a drawer is the way to go IF you have the space.
The magnetic jars solution is cute, but PLEASE don't keep them out in the light and heat, which will degrade the flavor of your spices really fast. Definitely keep 'em in the cabinet! Also, I am struggling with what I would do with the extra spices from the original containers if the magnetic jars didn't fit a whole bottle's worth of spices... you'd have to buy smaller amounts from the bulk bins (Whole Foods) for this solution.
The SpiceStack seems to fit the most spices in the least amount of space, out of the way in your cabinet. It might not look pretty, but it works!
I've used and liked a lot of these solutions (racks, lazy susans). I like seeing all the pictures, and I'm intrigued by the Velcro solution--that way you don't have to throw out all your existing spice bottles.
Right now I've got a shallow coat closet in the dining room, next to the kitchen, that's not for coats any more, but just miscellaneous stuff. So on the floor of it I put a four-shelf rolling wire rack, and I keep all my spices there, in alphabetical order. I do the refill thing from the bulk section of the health food store.
I'm thinking of painting the inside door of a Sauder pantry with the magnetic chalkboard paint then using the magnetic containers. Has anyone tried this?
After dealing with spice mayhem for the past several years, I finally just took my most-used spices (12 or so), put them in an assortment of my nicer jars of different sizes, and found a spot near my stove for them, organized by a cute white metal Ikea shelf so that it's a 2-tier display. All of my less-used spices went into a storage bin, labeled on top, at the bottom of my pantry.
my spices are in a drawer with the labels on top.
oh, and I only have 4 drawers in my kitchen...spice drawer is a priority.
I've been craving a magnetic spice rack for awhile, but food-safe metal jars are so pricey I haven't been able to justify it. Setting up for the spices I have would cost around $100, which just seems silly. I don't want glass because light isn't good for the spices, and using the inside of cabinet/pantry doors won't work in my kitchen. So for now, I'm stuck...but someday, I'll do it.
My husband is a chef and our spice jars are, in my humble opinion, out of control. But he is the master of the kitchen (I don't cook much) and he insists that he needs his spices at arm's length and not tucked away in a dark drawer. In our last apartment we made do with a series of unsightly "X" racks, but we just moved into a beautiful loft and we went spice rack hunting. We were VERY disappointed with the lack of options for large quantities of spices... but we happened upon the perfect solution in the Container Store while we were shopping for other items: Bamboo CD boxes. We purchased 2 (they are stackable) and they work like a DREAM. They fit three rows of spices deep, and 8 long for a total of 24 in each box. The bamboo looks clean and modern and matches bamboo utensils and cutting boards.
I have tons of spices and loooove this solution. They are pricey and were a splurge for me, but I needed a stylish solution. They came from the container store. I am using six of them, all put together so it really looks like one big rack:

The glass bottles are super sturdy and the stainless looks really nice. I wrote on the lids with a silver sharpie but you could use a labeler too.
Oops I forgot to post the second image. Here are the jars up close, and you can see how they sit inside the rack:

I gave up my utility drawer in my kitchen to store my spices in this past fall.
I used 250 ml Mason jars, the perfect size for the bags of spices that I usually buy. The drawer is pretty heavy, but I love it. I've added a few more since this picture was taken. I'm planning on moving in a few months, so I might try out the magnetic mounting then.

I have about 60 spice jars and very little space. I use a dvd storage tower from Ikea and put the spice jars in white plastic boxes with lids. The boxes are labeled with my label maker and I can peel and move them if I want.
The DVD tower: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/07305310
The white boxes were also from Ikea, in the bathroom section. I think they were about $1 each. Since they're opaque I can use whatever ugly spice jar comes my way.
I also have a couple of large clear Rubbermaid boxes of other spices that I use less often or that are too big for a spice jar (e.g., large dried chiles).
So I ran into the same problem a little while ago. There was limited space in our kitchen since I share with two other roommates, but we wanted a central place for all our spices where we didn't have to dig through a tiny cabinet.
After scouring the internet (including this site) for a solution that didn't have my spices displayed sideways or facing down (for fear of spices flying out of their containers), I decided to convert an ikea spice rack into a magnetic one that'll stick to the fridge.

Made three sets of them for a total of 18 spices. I love having easy access to them now!
we recently updated our to a elfa behind the door system from the container store.
it's one of the best purchases i think we have made in years for our kitchen.
