Q: I'm looking for a South Carolina-style mustard based barbecue sauce recipe. I can buy Sticky Fingers bottled sauce at the store, but it has HFCS in it, and BBQ sauce is so easy to make at home.
Any suggestions?

Editor: Cara Jo, we had the same revelation regarding HFCS in our favorite brand of barbecue sauce a few months ago and started making our own at home as well! Our favorite recipe is this Sweet and Tangy Barbecue Sauce. It has a little mustard in it, but maybe not as much as you're wanting?
Does anyone have a good recipe recommendation for Cara Jo?

i love that SC BBQ is your favorite! I grew up in the mid-state of South Carolina, around some of the best bbq that you can find anywhere, and now I'm in Charleston. Anyway, here is the recipe that I nabbed from a friend in colleg who worked at a VERY good bbq place.
1/2 cup of yellow mustard
1/4 cup of cider vinegar
a small squeeze of lemon juice (optional)
3-4 tbsp dark brown sugar (depending on taste)
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp Worstershire sauce
1/2 tsp of powdered cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp white pepper
1/4 tsp black pepper
Put all the ingredients into a well washed jar (I love old jelly jars for this recipe) and shake the heck out of it. A whisk works too, but what fun is that?!
mmmm South Carolina. I live in the Upstate. I wish I could help, but I just use Maurice's. I know that this comment is completely unhelpful, but I hope you find a good one so I can use it too :)
lmrinc is totally right on her food network link!!!! That Tyler Florence recipe is out of this world. My friends and family worship that recipe and I've made it so many times. I have started to add chipotle powder to my sauce for added heat and depth. Happy Cooking!
Take it from a Southerner. There is MUCH better mustard based bbq sauce out there than that of Sticky Fingers.
Here's a great one...also try the Cheerwine BBQ Sauce - it's delicious!

sarahope's recipe is very similar to mine. I add a bit of soy sauce, and I don't measure, but the ratios look dead-on to replicate the mustard sauce popularized by the Bessinger brothers in SC.
