Q: My favorite childhood birthday cake was the Champagne Cake from a Virginia Bakery in Berkeley, CA. I'm now living in Boise, ID and there are no bakeries that make this cake here. My birthday is coming up and I would like to create this for myself. Can you help find a recipe?

Editor: I just saw this recipe in the new cookbook Vintage Cakes and was immediately smitten! I recommend picking up a copy and starting there with your research:

I grew up near Virginia Bakery and I believe I remember their champagne cake being a chiffon cake with whipped cream frosting and a light custard filling. Looking online there seem to be many champagne cakes, but this looks like a good place to start: http://bakingbites.com/2007/12/champagne-chiffon-cake/
I'd fill it with bavarian cream (pastry cream lightened with whipped cream) and frost with sweetened whipped cream.
