Greetings from Los Angeles! Yesterday we went to the Santa Monica Farmers' Market to shop for dinner and walked the aisles fighting off a nasty case of Santa Monica envy. Along the way, we came across a handsome young farmer selling this stuff.
Any guesses? Click through for more photos.

These treasures are sold on the stalk like this because of how labor intensive it is to get them down to their edible bits (see below.) We're having a ******** **** shelling party tomorrow.

See that wad of cash below? They weren't cheap!

So... still stumped? Leave your answer below.

Fresh garbanzos.
yes, chick peas, and they taste amazing!
"Handsome young farmer", eh? :-)
Maybe we need to have a Kitchn Farmer's Market Hottie contest or something?
LOL at chrisAT! Indeed, there are tons of cuties at the markets. Why do you think I get up so &^%$ early???
What vegetable? I only saw the cutie in the dark shirt...
Fresh garbanzo beans (chick peas).
yes, it's garbanzo, which i bought "green" for the first time a month ago at the hispanic market. too bad no one told me i wasn't supposed to shell them before i cooked them. only after i'd suffered through the whole pile did someone make it clear to me i should have done them like edamame: in the shell, steamed, and with salt.
garbanzos!
Oh my god, I went to art school with him in San Francisco! It deeply concerns me that he is selling food now; I wouldn't touch anything he has handled. He was stuck in a 70s-performance art mode and actually killed a goldfish during a 'performance piece'. Eeeevil.
Oh, and he also swallowed bullets once as a 'performance piece' and had to immediately be sent to the ER.
Interesting and educational.Would be nice to go to a Santa Monica Market, lucky you.
