We get a lot of questions and requests for advice on recipe organization systems, so we were excited to see this recipe binder from Jaime and and Jacinda at Prudent Baby. It's very practical and inspirational, and they've included some free downloads to help you create your own version.
Do you keep a binder like this? We especially liked the suggestion to keep your recipes inside plastic sleeves to protect them from splatters, and so you can insert smaller handwritten pages and newspaper clippings.
This notebook is just so well put together; what a wonderful collection of recipes and memories!

It looks so much like mine !! I think I will download the cover though, I don't have any ;)
Great looking book, seems like a much better system than mine. I'm probably behind the times, but I have a little recipe box, and it really doesn't cut it. :)
never thought about it but this sounds waaay better than my recipe box. seriously, i'm making one of these this weekend. thanks!
I have been doing this for ears, and it really works. We are now up to 5 binders so give some thought to organization.
Our binders are organized by "Soup, Salad", "Meat, Fish, Main Dish", etc. But there is also the issue of how to organize within binders.
Whenever I try to put together a recipe binder, I become paralyzed at the "choose the categories" stage. This looks like a good start.
That's exactly how I keep my recipes! When I cook I take out one page, and the good thing it is in clear plastic sleeve so even if I drop something on it, the page won't get dirty.
I have four binders in my cookbook cabinet, one for each season of the year. Inside, I store the recipes I’ve torn out of magazines, newspapers and similar under tabs labeled by month. It might be the most organized aspect of my life. I don't use plastic sleeves though...
I have 6 binders that contain all of my clippings, and the recipes are protected by plastic sleeves. They're organized similarly to melkozak's, with some sort of organization within as well, but no tabs. That might be my next step in the project that has been years in the making...
I have three LARGE (2 inch) 3 ring binders. Recipes are grouped in pairs, each pair in a plastic sleeve, organized by category-each category seperated by dividers..
My cookie/dessert binder is the biggest one.
I do need to put something on the outside of them, though, for asthetics.
This has helped me tremendously!
This is exactly how I keep the recipes I find online. Though, it is really annoying that I can not for the life of me find dividers that stick out beyond the edges of my page protectors--so I just used some small, neon orange post-its instead.
I also have two large (2 inch) 3-ring binders, only for recipes that I've made. They're meticulously organized (one has entrées and desserts, the other has everything else from breads to soups to drinks to miscellany, and all meticulously sub-categorized). Recipes I've saved but haven't made are categorized into hanging files according to the same organizational scheme. If anyone's REALLY curious, I can let you know what the sub-categories are, but it's probably very uninteresting.
In the binders, I use photo pages (the kind where you peel the clear plastic off of the sticky backing), which work perfectly for clipped recipes. Printed recipes get hole-punched and stuck (unprotected) behind those pages in the appropriate category. When I use those paper recipes, I slide them into plastic sheet protectors. I'd done that for years, but they actually taught us that trick when I went to culinary school.
This perhaps makes me sound much more A-type than I really am, but there would be NO WAY to keep up with all my saved recipes otherwise! My closet might be a wreck, but I know where to keep my priorities straight.

I absolutely love these! I fill them with my favorite recipes and give them away as gifts for friends and family. They are so convenient to use in the kitchen as they stand up as an easel and the recipes are protected with sheet protectors.

@Kakugori - i finally figured out a simple solution to this problem. put dividers in page protectors, too. just cut a slit in a page protector for the divider tab.
We have been doing this for years too. When my wife, who is naturally an organization freak, first set it up I thought she was a little nuts but humored her. We have four binders - one for each season. We have the page protectors and dividers to keep things orderly. This has been such a huge time saver for us over the years. We take turns picking recipes from the binder each week and get all of our shopping for the week done in one trip.
There are two nice things about having it set up by season. First, most magazines feature recipes that use fruits and veggies that are in season so I'm not looking for fresh corn in January. Second, it keeps you from falling back to the same favorite or easy recipes too often. This keeps all of the recipes fresh throughout the year.
i just wanted to say that i figured out the divider sticking out problem...i bought dividers with tabs on the TOP at office depot and they don't stick out past the notebook...it's true, picture here: http://www.prudentbaby.com/2010/02/recipe-binder-gift.html
