Q: My wife and I have found a house we love, but the owners are taking the stainless steel gas Jenn-Air range/oven combo. Any suggestions on a replacement? Our closing is May 25, so we have some time, but need to get things in order financially soon. We're willing to pay a little extra for quality, but nothing overly expensive.

Editor: This Jenn-Air range and oven runs about $1800, so that's what it would cost to replace it.
Readers, what are your experiences with gas oven/range combos? Any good stories (or bad!) about brands and models? Any advice?

I love my Dacor gas range with electric oven. They are made in the USA and are top quality. I have had it for 10 years and it is still going strong.
I inherited the Jenn Air pro dual fuel gas range, electric oven combo.
It's 14 years old and I love it. Why not replace it with a new JennAir?
I would do a gas range/electric oven combo if anything happened to my present appliance. The extra cost would be well worth it.
Do NOT go w/Jenn-Air. Great product & features but a huge design flaw in the control panel (oven heat/steam gets behind it & shorts out the circuits, rendering the whole oven useless--stove still ok). Our 4 year-old Jenn-Air is on its 3rd control board. Horrible dealing w/them on the phone, too.
When we renovated the kitchen in the house we bought last year, I picked the Maytag Gemini gas stove. It was around $1180 at Best Buy at the time. It's a true double oven--a smaller one on top and a larger one on the bottom (not an oven and a warming drawer like so many other "double oven" ranges have). It is around 27-30", which was important, as I needed it to fit in the space left by the original stove. I LOVE this stove. I cooked Thanksgiving for 13 on it without a hitch. (BTW, the top smaller oven is great for cooking amaller amounts of things nd not having to preheat a whole big oven. I love it.)
I bought the same Jenn-Air as pictured but in white Feb. 2009 and have had no problems. I use the oven almost every day. Before I had a Kitchen Aide with similar features and had to have it repaired 3 times in 5 years. I bought this Jenn-Air instead of doing a 4th repair on the Kitchen Aide.
We just purchased a GE Cafe range for our kitchen renovation. It has a lot of the features you would find in higher end ranges (think Wolf, Thermador) but without the high price tag and it comes in standard 30in opening. Check smaller local retailers for the best price. We bought ours from a locally owned appliance store for 700 less than what the Great Indoors and others had it on sale for.
Like SQ I have had numerous problems with cooking appliances that have those electronic touch pads. It is possible to design electronics for high heat & humidity, but the extra cost & engineering time is not found in most regular-grade appliances.
When we had to replace our gas range (the controller board died & had been discontinued) I found a model with just knobs. Simple, mechanical knobs. No electronics (outside of the ignitors)! We bought a Bertazzoni & love it. The oven is super accurate & it has a lot of integrated safety features - supposedly Europe has stricter rules & these are made in Italy. For a SS range 30" wide you're looking at just over $2k.
Side benefit - the woman who cleans our house every 2 weeks says it's a good stainless steel because it cleans really easily & stays clean (even though I cook most nights on it). Those controller boards are $300 to replace (parts cost only, it would be more if you hired someone to replace it) so if you can find the features you like at a price you can afford with just knobs I recommend going old-school on the controls :)
I happened to save the Consumer Reports 2011 kitchen guide, the top recommendations for 30" gas are GE Profile, LG, and Electrolux, their only 30" dual fuel recommendation was KitchenAid. The sidebar says KitchenAid was the most repair-prone gas (followed by Maytag), and JennAir had the most repairs for dual fuel.
I also have the 2012 pro-style range ratings, but they run $3-7k. None of the 30" pro ranges were recommended.
We have a stainless steel gas Bosch that's been totally reliable for 8 years now. And it still looks as good as new! Sealed burners make it really easy to clean. Looks like the current models are running about $1k.
Well, if you're unlucky like I am, you're going to have to replace it with another JenAir because the downdraft exhaust system is the only one that will work for the way my kitchen is set up. I freaking _hate_ my Jenair. It's a glass top. Which is impossible to keep clean, with all the specials, razor blades, soft lint free rags...all if and the stupid thing still looks dirty. Plus, it's not that good at cooking things. And, to add insult to injury-the downdraft system _sucks_ and not in a good way. However, I will say one good thing-the oven works quite well.
If your kitchen is narrow, Neff do a stove with a door that slides right into a slot underneath when it is fully opened. I chose this for a galley kitchen remodel, and it's really useful in the small space. Otherwise, we have had our Smeg range for over 10 years now, and I'm still pleased with it after 10 years of almost daily use.
