Q: We cooked a ham for Easter and I was lucky enough to be able to bring home the ham bone. I have no idea what to do with it! Does anyone have an suggestions on what would be tasty and not extremely difficult for me to make?

Editor: Christina, mmm that looks superb! Make a pot of Melissa Clark's delicious Ham Bone, Greens, and Bean Soup! Or throw it into a big mess of collard greens while they're cooking.
Readers, what's your favorite way to use up a ham bone?

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

Ham and beans or split pea soup with ham. Yummy!
Red beans and rice, New Orleans style!
My mom threw a ham bone in with a bag of Goya 16 Bean Soup Mix and it really made the dish. Plus - super easy since you're using a bag of pre-mixed beans!
Boil the ham bone with chopped up veggies of your choice and add salt to taste. It's delicious!
throw the ham bone in with a crockpot of beans for added richness.
What CAN'T you do? Split pea soup. Beans. Collards. Chili. The list goes on...
The first thing my family says after the ham is sliced is save the bone for a big pot of beans! It's just as traditional as the ham itself I think. At least in my family.
This is funny because about 45 minutes ago I just started a crock pot of split pea and ham soup (bay leaves, garlic, onions, stock, water, ham bone and a 1 lb bag of split peas) now the waiting begins!! Corn bread will accompany it later. Good luck!
BEANS. With a hambone you don't even need them fancy Rancho Gordo ones, but do go to the (small) trouble of soaking them from dry yourself. Garlic, onion, and maybe some carrot and celery with some herbs in the bottom of the pot until golden, then add beans, bone, and water to cover... simmer till tender, salt when 2/3 of the way done, pepper to taste. That's all you need - serve with buttery rice and some cornbread. Maybe greens on the side if you feel like it. Oh man... now I feel like I have to make some beans too!
pea soup.
oh man, now I need to figure out how to chop my ham bone up. So many things I want to make.
I love making pork stock with them! Delicious and easy. Then, that great flavor is imparted to all sorts of things!
Just last night I made pasta fagioli with a ham bone for the first time. It was transcendent!! My hubby and I had a very serious discussion about licking the pot.
Grab yourself a bag of Bob's Red Mill 13 Bean Soup and follow the directions on the back. All you need is the soup mix, the bone and some tomatoes to make a stoopid-easy, really, really good batch of Fart Fuel.
And it freezes really really well.
Potato-asparagus soup with chunks of ham. Yummo.
thanks ya'll!!! exciting to see my post on here eeeeeeeek!
I have spent the past couple days trying to find a recipe this thing!! looks like beans are the way to go...
@jacz - you have to chop it up a certain way? Can it not just be thrown in whole?
@twowheeler - my bf is going to die when i tell him i'm cooking fart fuel for dinner. he might be sleeping on the couch!
oh gosh... forgot to proof read from all the excitement. ***y'all
I second the editor's mention of the hambone, beans, and kale soup. Simply Marvelous!
Cream of Potato & Ham Soup.
Split pea soup of course.
Ham Stock- freeze or pressure can it.
Split pea and ham soup!!! YELLOW spilt peas, not green, and plenty of carrots in there too!
I couldn't wait to get the ham bone from Easter dinner to make my yummy Split Pea Soup. The whole ham bone and some extra chunks of meat make the split pea soup delicious!
Asian rice porridge (congee). You could also use the ham bone for soup stock.
All sound amazing....I'm coming over for dinner!
Definitely ham bone soup. It's the best thing in the world. Loads of veges and split peas, just a little chicken stock, top it up with water and simmer for a few hours. Heavenly. I could eat it three times a day for the rest of my life.
Hi, I found this site because I wanted ideas on how to use the ham bone from Easter, very good suggestions. I would like to make stock and use it to make my fav. Black bean soup, any comments?
