Good Question: What Color Should My Kitchen Be?

Here's a question from reader Liz. Usually we leave purely aesthetic questions like this one to our sister home sites, but we'll throw this one out to Kitchn readers, for once. After all, aesthetics are not unimportant! What sort of advice do all you cooks have to offer here?

I just bought my first house and it has this cute little kitchen. It needs a new paint job pretty bad due to the previous owners' smoking habits. I don't mind the yellow but think that it could look a little less country kitchen with different palette choices. This being my first place and all, I have zero experience picking out colors. I'd like to do something fresh and bold but am worried that I'll go over the top. Any advice/suggestions?

Liz, we do love yellow kitchens! It looks like the trim is in good shape - perhaps a good scrubbing is in order, then a repaint of the wall spaces. We do like crisp, bright white in a kitchen; it's a good offset to many kitchen appliances and the white and steel common in many kitchens now. It also adds a brighter modern touch - more than antique white or cream.

We would add some modern printed curtains in the windows to bring everything a little more up to date and out of the country look.
