Q: I am in charge of hosting and planning a bridal shower for a friend. She wants a larger party with lots of friends and family, so we've decided to do a potluck. As the hostess though, I feel like I need to provide a main dish for the potluck as well as a main (or only) dessert.
Does anyone have suggestions for a make-ahead dish that can feed a lot of people and doesn't cost a lot to make? Also, any suggestions for "bridal shower" desserts besides one big cake?

Editor: Alexis, how kind of you to throw such a fun shower for your friend! My suggestion is to coordinate really well with the other people bringing dishes for the potluck (set a theme, perhaps?), and to arrange things so that you only have to bring a main dish or a dessert. You're doing all the work of hosting, after all, and so it is completely fine for you to delegate some of the work to others! If you do feel that you need to make two dishes, what about a simple stack of creative tea sandwiches? They're inexpensive and can be made ahead of time. You could pair them with this simple Elderflower Lemon Cake. Very sweet, and rather old-fashioned.
Readers, what are your thoughts?
