I'll be the first to admit that the name kind of makes me wince. It brings to mind McDonald's ill-fated attempt to lighten up their menu in the early 90's with the McSalad Shaker. And yet, when I saw the Fit and Fresh Salad Shaker while browsing Bed, Bath, and Beyond several weeks ago, I was struck by how clever it was.
Basically it's a plastic storage container designed for lunchtime salads. The container can hold four cups of salad while the lid has a built-in ice pack, a compartment for untensils, and a small well that holds four tablespoons of dressing. When it's time to eat, you simply turn the knob, dispensing the dressing into the salad and give it a shake to toss and coat.
You don't have to worry about multiple containers getting separated and lost in your company's kitchenette refrigerator and you don't need to bring a separate bottle of salad dressing. Everything is right there in one place.
You can find the Fit and Fresh Salad Shaker at Amazon.com ($7.99), and Drugstore.com ($6.99)

Floral Drink Dispen...

I really was wishing I would find something like this, just today as I packed my salad for lunch... unwillingly pouring my dressing on so I didn't have to take the bottle with me.
My mom got a bunch of containers similar to this 5 or so years ago. They don't hold cutlery or ice, but they do the all important part of holding dressing - you just pushed down on it and it would release the dressing onto your salad. Give'r a shake and you're good to go (except the time that the lid wasn't snapped on quite all the way and I shook my salad into a coworker's lap.. needless to say, I learned to err on the side of caution and always hold the lid on now).
I have something similar to this that I have used for years. I think I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond ... my only problem is that I wish it was a bit larger. By the time I fill it with a large portion of greens, there's not much room to shake them around with the dressing ... This one looks smaller if anything.
I've also seen people put the dressing in the bottom of a bowl and then greens over-top to store it for a few hours, keeping the dressing mostly away from the greens, but I haven't tried it ...
Along the lines of what Jesser mentioned,
I have brought salad with dressing for lunch all in one container by layering everything that won't get wilty on the bottom of the container with the salad dressing (usually beets, beans, and cucumbers). The lettuce and cheese stays pretty fresh, and the beets turn everything on the bottom a festive pink.
This product still looks nice though, especially if the salad is mostly lettuce. But I wonder if it is hard to clean.
My wife purchased this a while back and it was nice for a while. But it didn't take long before plastic log for the lid holding the flatware wore out. The same thing happened to the salad dressing reservoir. Yes it is clever but I wouldn't recommend it.
I bought this, as well as one of its sister products. Both wore out (lids don't seal, plastic warped) after about two weeks of use. Also, the salad shaker was rampant with design flaws. First, the dressing cup never really released that much dressing. I had to disassemble it and scrape it out each time. The utensil holder is too small for most conventional flatware (the items that come with are about a one-time use thing). It's a mess. I would not recommend this product, or any other in the Fresh Fit line.
sad to say that I agree with the posters not recommending this item. it's a pain to clean and isn't very well made. the idea is great but the execution is lousy.
I bought this thing also a few years ago, the thing you turn to get the dressing out worked once and never again, same goes for the utensil lid. I would not recomment buying this.
How about instead of buying kitschy new products we see ways to use what we already have?
I'm sure we all have reusable containers such as tupperware or gladware. I know tupperware makes small 1oz and 2 oz containers. Gladware makes really small "snack bowls" you could use for the dressing. Maybe they aren't all integrated like this, but then we can get a lunch bag (or make a reusable one!) and put it all together.
Its convenient, but I've used ones like this and they are a pain in the butt to clean and not very dishwasher friendly.
I repurposed a small, glass jam jar for dressing, which I stick into the corner of my glass tupperware that has the lockable sides (found it at Marshalls). Keeps everything fresh and has the added bonus that when I remove the jam jar and pour on the dressing, there is adequate room made for some serious shaking! Small jars that also work well are the kind made for samples of honey, mustard etc....World Market has TONS of them for sale, and you get to try yummy new things before repurposing the jar!
Works like a charm and is practically free.
Perhaps the people who had issues with this washed it in a dishwasher? I've had one for about 3 years now and use it multiple times a week, hand-washing each time. Nothing has worn out, it works perfectly and I find it plenty large enough for a nice lunchtime salad. I even bought one for my boss as she was so jealous of mine!
I've seen these for the past few years, and while it's neat, I was never really tempted to buy it. When I bring a salad to work I use one of the tall square ziploc containers. I put my dressing in a half cup container and drop it right into the salad container with the greens. I'm still only carrying one container but I don't have to make my salad soggy. I never realized this was such a problem for people.
Does anyone have a better recommendation for a portable salad bowl? I've been re-using a container from a fast-food salad for two weeks now, and it is leaky beyond all reason, but exactly the right size and shape. I hate eating out of deep Tupperware for some reason.
I'm not sure how the posters above are washing their lids. Perhaps their dishwasher water temps are really high? I have never had a problem with mine warping. I recently bought a set of the smaller 1 cup containers which I LOVE. They are really usefully for me for packing up leftovers because they do not take up a lot of room in the fridge and for portion control with my lunches. I noticed they had slightly redesigned the lids from last time bought them and they seem a lot tighter.I
Sorry one more post I also have noticed the Fit and Fresh Salad thing and the larger lunch box with the purple lid on Glee. The OCD teacher used them a few times. I get WAY to excited when i see things i own on TV.
I would just use a regular plastic container (or one of my bento boxes) with a re-used, lidded, plastic portion container. You know, the kind you get dressing or sauces in. Or if you want something that's really leak-proof, Lock n' Lock makes tiny containers that are the perfect size for dressing.
I bought one of these over a year ago and have used it 2-3 times a week ever since with no issues. It's in the same condition as when I bought it. Sometimes I wash by hand and sometimes in the dishwasher. I absolutely love it! I fill it with lettuce and whatever fresh veggies I got from my weekly coop share, plus a bit of goat or feta from the farmer's market, and fill the dressing part with some balsamic. My salad is so much more fresh and tasty then the salads sold near my office. And I've saved tons of money from not having to purchase salads.
