The holidays are still safely ahead in the obscure future, but it's not too early to get started on this idea. It's an idea we've had for years to do ourselves, but we always forget until it's too late. But not this year!

The idea is to make a family cookbook. With the wealth of self-publication sites like Lulu and Asuka, it's easier than ever to publish a high-quality, completely custom book. But there's still a lot of footwork required for what we have in mind:

First is to gather all of the best old family recipes. You know, the ones on stained old recipe cards written in grandma's hand. Then, we'd cook each and every one of them over the course of the coming months. Using The Kitchn's own pointers, we'll photograph each dish and compose it alongside the recipe, then lay it out in a fully illustrated cookbook. It's a lot of work in the front end, but when that's done, we'd simply order X number of copies to give everyone as holiday gifts this year.

We know it would be a hit and we're so glad we remembered the idea in time this year. Now, it just takes finding the time in the busy fall schedule to make it happen! Is this an idea you'll try, or one you've already done? Let us know how it went in the comments below!
