You know that classic look of subway tile that you often see in kitchens and bathrooms? One important detail to get the look right: black grout.
The black grout really sets off the subway tile pattern, especially when used with white tile. And a very practical reason to love it? It doesn't show staining like white grout does.

I have considered this, but fear I would regret it later. It looks very stylish right now, but would it look dated sooner than classic white? I think white grout seems cleaner and brighter.
No thank you. Ick!
Hate it.
like so much else, it only looks great in a perfectly clean home. but it sure looks cool in the 1st photo especially.
I think if you want to go classic, it would be grey grout since that's what color the "mud" was that was used in the "old" days. (And I think that some of those shown are grey--can't stand the last one.)
I have this in my shower. It looks great for the most part, but I wish I knew how to clean it. While it doesn't show dark stains, it does show hard water stains.
Funny! We just tiled our back splash with white subway tile and black grout! I love it! It give a great vintage kitchen feel. (a la Julia Child) Plus I don't have to worry about red sauce stains.
I really like this, and it seems more practical than white-on-white. (Though I like the look of that, too.)
I use my year old kitchen daily with new subway tiles and light gray grout, I'm a fan. Still some clean up, but any dirt in the grout doesn't show as much as white did. Black seems harsh but might be ok if the joint lines weren't so thick as in pic 4. Some close ups of various grout colors with subway would be helpful for folks thinking of re-doing their tile.
Hate, hate, hate black grout, *especially* with white tiles.
I love love love dark grout. LOVE.
Ok, hate #4. But i've always been a fan of the "classic" look, with white subway tiles and dark grey (not black grout). Considering it for my bathroom too, since in NYC white grout tends to get rust stains pretty quick and that wouldn't show up on the dark grout.
We had a customer comment once that black grout with white subway tile looks like the tile in an old subway station that hasn't been cleaned in 50 years. It has it's place but most folks seem to choose white grout or a nice, cool grey color grout with their white subway tile.
So graphic and cool! I love the last photo especially.
If you have to tell people in the title of the post that it isn't mold, is this really a good idea?
Stylish, but perhaps not the best idea if you have your mother in law around often.
