While roaming through the aisles of our local Costco, we happened upon this garage storage unit. It has sleek drawers that are able to hold some serious weight, padded interior liners, thick butcher block top — we had to have it! But it's not going in the garage!
Although we don't officially own it yet (still saving our pennies) we fell hard for this tool storage unit — we mean, our new kitchen island! Its drawers are perfect for storage of thin kitchen items like knives and other tools, while still having deeper ones able to hold your dishes. We love knowing that after we put it through years of use it should still continue on with flying colors, or if we ever tire of it that it can be sent to the studio to hold paints and art supplies.
This isn't the first time we have made a kitchen island purchase at Costco (ironically from the same "garage" department) and after moving from a large loft space to a teeny tiny one, we had to sell our beloved table, so we were elated when we happened upon this one in our travels to find inexpensive meats and cheeses.
What do you think? Would this work in your kitchen? Why or why not? Let us know below!

I love it! Which Costco did you find this in?
That is awesome! We are lucky to have a big island in our kitchen, but if we didn't, I'd definitely consider something like this. LOVE that it is on wheels and can be moved and re-purposed (like to serve a buffet or something) - makes it a very functional piece.
frostiblack - It was in the downtown Kansas City Costco. I wasn't able to find it online, but if the one near you doesn't have one, I'm sure they could ship it store to store for you.
love it!!! We have a similar island without any storage underneath. Awesome find!
Yes great repurpose. Personally I would do away with the wheels and put it on a smaller base. The base could set it at the optimum height for this purpose and give some toe room, as well as eliminate those stubbed toes from the wheels and casters. Would also be nice to add some electrical outlets, hard wired in through the floor.
Love it. Too bad I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a big enough space in NYC to fit something like that!
Oh to have the cash and the space. Would be great in a craft room too.
My mom and I saw this at Sam's last weekend and were SALIVATING on how awesome it would be in a kitchen!
So...great googly moogly...how much was it? This thing is awesome!!!
re price...oops! Never mind...I see the photo now! :-)
I considered this recently too, but with a stainless steel top garage organizer. It was cheaper and larger and better than anything I could've gotten at IKEA.
Oh, now this is a really cool idea/post! I wonder if we have these in Canada or can special order them? We're probably moving back East just outside Toronto and I'm going to be having a basement apartment and want to cheaply install a little kitchenette--I can see myself using this as the starting piece for it.
were there any smaller ones there? 72" seems really long for my tiny kitchen.
bklynchic - I do believe they have a smaller model with less drawers (obviously), though I can't remember if it has a butcher block top or not. You could always add one later and pick one up from IKEA if that's the case!
I have something almost identical in my kitchen (not my idea, the landlord bought it) and it's great! Mine is much smaller and has a white front, but those long drawers are fantastic for all kinds of things.
mandarinmarie, you should send us photos of it in action!
I'm thinking this could replace the entire cupboard units housing all the utensils, bakeware, silverware, pots, pans, cleansers, cotton dish towels, sponges, the whole shebang...everything but the food. Am i stating the obvious? Whoa, what a hard working unit. Can't decide if the price is right, though.
AND the appliances inside that nifty side door.
I would definitely do this in the kitchen, but I live with three girls, It won't fly. Too manly
Awesome!
Just make sure you don't do any prep work on that top. All rubber wood products come form overseas and I would never trust the finish on it. Can guarantee it's not food safe.
I found the maker's website, but they don't seem to have that particular one..

Brilliant!
Between the never-heard-of-before off-brand - rubberwood top and the price - I'm betting that it's Made in China.
It's a useful looking piece, but I'd rather spend a bit more to help my neighbor keep his job and stick w/ a Made in the USA Craftsman toolchest.
The rubberwood top could be sanded and re-sealed if you're concerned about it but love the functionality of the piece and although I'd much rather supposed my neighbor and buy Craftsman, the last three Craftsman tool chests we've had have broken within 12 months. Lost wheels, broken tracks, hinges to be replaced...
My last apartment in Iowa, I bought a stainless steel workshop table for a dining table, with 2 stools.
Left the stools with the ex when I moved, and took the table along with me. Its now an extension for the lack of kitchen counter space in my apartment, and matches a modern design baker rack from target.com
I just saw this post from almost a year ago and am wondering ANY way to track one down. Help?
I purchased this today at Costco in Thornton, Colorado.
