- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- When my long-distance boyfriend and I moved in together, it was really important to me that our apartment feel like a home and reflect both our tastes. We chose a bright avocado (the color is actually "Sassy Green") for the kitchen walls. The calendar my boyfriend made, a vintage Fellini poster we found in Italy last summer, hand-me-down cookware from our families, and magnets made from personal ads I cut out of indie newspapers are all little artifacts from our lives that make the kitchen feel like home for us.
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- The over-cabinet baskets, wall-mounted spice rack, ledge above the stove, and repurposed bathroom etagere maximize vertical storage space. We "ikea-hacked" our knife rack by gluing two magnetic knife racks together to mount on the fridge to minimize counter clutter. To free up limited counter space and prevent spill damage, I put my iPad or cookbook on a removable cabinet mounted shelf when I'm cooking.
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- I love to bake because it makes the whole apartment smell delicious. And I love using herbs from my window box garden. I tried a savory basil cookie recipe recently that combined the best of both worlds.

Yes to the color and creative storage!
Love the green! My kitchen is about the same size so this really helps and gives me ideas for organization. Never thought about hanging the baskets on the outside of the cabinet.
Love the wall mounted spice rack! Anyone know where it's from or can link to similar ones?
Here is a kitchen of someone who likes to cook. I'm amused that she "faced" all of her spices.
I got the spice rack at Container Store a few years ago. They no longer carry that model but they do have this similar grid system: http://www.containerstore.com/shop/kitchen/pantryOrganizers/doorWallRacks?productId=10027934
I've been looking for a magnetic knife holder to attach to the refrigerator. All I've been able to find are the ones that are attached in the wall by screws. Anyone know where I can get one?
KKHUGHEY, you can glue two Ikea Grundtal knife racks together! Here is more info from Ikeahackers: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2008/08/magnetic-hacks.html
I'd love to get more information on how you've got the iPad hanging there. My eye went to that immediately because I've been trying to brainstorm a solution to do the same thing in my kitchen. I love your space, such an effective use of every square inch!
So many of these entries are a little boring, color wise. This kitchen makes me want to take salsa lessons. :) Awesome use of space and a ton of personality -- I love it!
Spring1onu, you can findnthe iPad holder on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HE65OA/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B005NHR6KM&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0EC3M2M6PGNJYQDH21TZ
Love the green wall! When I lived in DC I had a brown Brown stove (same size)
Is that an iPad hanging over the sink? Gail, how did you hook it up? Do tell! I've never seen anything like it!
Oh, i see it in the comments above. thank U! :)
yay, colour!!!!!!!!
Love the Sassy Green walls and selective touches of red! And, you still have room for a bench filled with cookbooks. Do people hang out in your kitchen while you cook by sitting on the bench?
it's like our kitchens are cousins!!! I have pretty much the same color and also love my magnetic knife holder ;) I'm in the owner category.
and I just read that you also live in DC!
so beautiful Gail, if you ever get tired of politics/DC you can come to my house and design it! *hugs* I can't believe it has been this long since I've seen you
Hope you win!
I love this! I'm so over all white sterile kitchen. This feels so lived in, yet also so put together. Way to go!!!!
It is fantanstic
Can't go wrong with Fellini
Imaginative, utilitarian and thoroughly delightful. I love it!
Very Nice Design! I like the color!
What's that teapot doing in the skillet?
We leave the teapot and skillet out since we use them often. The teapot sits on top of the cast iron skillet when not in use so we have access to the front left burner. Since our stove is only 21 inches wide, you can't use two side-by-side burners. If we need more than one burner, I stash the skillet and pot on the bench by the cookbooks.
Terrific looking kitchen Gail! You deserve the big prize. That framed Amarcord poster is tops. Elegant, stylish, and fun. Did I say big prize? ;)
Anyone with that many sharp knives in such a small space has to be good!
I have cowgirl boots that color!
Love the green, it makes the small space look proud! I need to get to DC and watch you make me a meal in that little space. Love the ipad touch...
Love it!
When I grow up I want a kitchen just like this...only bigger.
My kitchen is similar to this design so it is nice to see how they are managing and funny because we have done similar things to kep space and build on functionality. Love it!!!
Sometimes you need more than coffee to wake you up in the morning. THINK GREEN!
I am not trying to offend the owner of this kitchen, because I know how hard it is to make a rental kitchen look nice. And in my opinion this kitchen is nice, but not great. I feel there were a few other kitchens in the contest that are much nicer than this one.
