Have you had an afternoon snack? Ready for a quiz? We were browsing some French kitchens this morning, sighing over the airy, casual, neutral quality we love about so many of them. But many Americans have adopted this look—and, of course, there are modern kitchens in France. Can you tell which country these kitchens are in?
Some of the fixtures and appliances give it away. Maybe even the styling or lighting of the photographs (American magazines tend to have a specific look). But even when we were putting together this gallery, we kept getting confused.
Here are the answers. How did you do? What were your clues?
• 1. French
• 2. French
• 3. American
• 4. French
• 5. American
• 6. American
• 7. French
• 8. French
• 9. French
• 10. American

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

I wouldn't even know where to begin with guessing on these (I'm sure I got most of them wrong) but I do really love the look of *all* of them!
Yay! I got all but two right!
Fun idea for a Friday afternoon!
Fun! I missed numbers 1 and 9. The sloping ceiling gave #2 away, and I feel like I've seen #'s 7 and 10 before so I knew what they were.
Got 'em all right.
The giveaways are appliances, taps, kitchen size, and room features (windows, trim, ceiling height, proportions, etc.).
The size of the stoves gives the American kitchens away immediately.
The "Exit" sign in #9 cracks me up! I bet that is more rare in France than "Sortie" signs are in the US.
I missed #8. My guess was for #6 was Portland.
What's funny about this survey is there are plenty of American rooms, buildings, etc that mimic architecture from other parts of the world, especially the Old World. You never see an Italian kitchen trying to mimic Philadelphia 1760.
got them all. in addition to the appliance sizes, there seems to be something about the way the cabinets are installed that gives it away.
I was testing a hypothesis about cabinet installation lcg.
The French ones are usually not. Installed that is. They have feet!
It worked for quite a few, but then the photographers got tricky and refused to take a picture of the cabinet bottoms.
Very fun!
exactly cashba! and the ones that didn't show the bottoms had other giveaways.
i'm surprised the #9 shot with destroyed walls actually looks as pretty as it does! just goes to show, staging can cure *almost* anything! :)

Elizabeth, just because a picture was found in "Marie Claire Maison" doesn't mean it was taken in France.
Kitchen #4 is actually Swedish. It is published in the book "ÄLSKADE HEM” pg. 112/115, published by IKEA FAMILY.
Woohoo -- I got them all right! The appliances are a dead giveaway :)
